I fell in love with Shakespeare via Jeremy Irons playing Richard II in London at the Barbican with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I think I went and saw it 4 or 5 times! Thanks to my slightly immature 22 year-old's crush, supported by an earlier commitment by my parents to take their teenage kids to see RSC and NT performances in London, Shakespeare found his way into my heart and I haven't looked back since!! My own background is in the visual arts (architecture and painting) however, I've taught English and Persian as a Second language for years, and the love of the "verbal" in me has made me put this group together to provide an opportunity for members to gather, meet, and savor Shakespeare's poetic wisdom as an ensemble!
Yes - both at the Shakespeare Theatre Company and the Folger Theatre.
Having grown up in London (and my heritage being Persian) I've always enjoyed good, textured tales. A combination of my Persian heritage ("1001 Nights", Rumi, Hafez etc.) + years of going to see good theatre in London have kept this interest going!
"Shakespeare Lovers" is attracting a wonderful group of intelligent and impassioned folks! I am grateful to "Meetup" for facilitating such gatherings. We carefully plough through each play as an ensemble. The process helps us catch the poetic beauty of the material - both in execution and meaning - making for a deep and meaningful experience. ~ Afsaneh (group organizer.)
