Angie (Bear Heart) Rapalyea will present a series of classes on Shamanistic practices....drawing upon her many years of experience! The first session will be an Introduction to Shamanism, and will be an informative class for both beginners and people who have studied before.
Just to give you a taste of some of the teachings Angie has in mind, here are some presentation notes that she has compiled:
Everything is alive, even those things you think are inanimate: stones, furniture, etc. This is contrary to everything our Western civilization, which is very young in the world, has taught us, either directly or by inferred example.
All living things are sentient in their own way and as our cosmic Relatives are deserving of respectful treatment and Reverence for all Life Forms; if we learn to converse with them they can teach us much. Note: this means an accent on LISTENING, not talking.
Our ancestors are around us, waiting to converse with us; both our direct familial line and our cultural ancestors: Old Ones. This can include people from specific civilizations or healing practices, Elders in some way. Sometimes our points of intuition may be their whispers in our ears that we become aware of!
This is also true of Helping Spirits such as Totems: animal, plant or stone spirits, who are waiting to share the wisdom of their entire Nations with us: ex: Bear Nation, Willow Nation, Amethyst Nation, etc. If they show themselves as personal Teachers, they become our Allies. This involves a deliberate agreement on our part to be in respectful, long-term partnership with them; we must participate in and nourish these new relationships. Usually the totems/ allies spend their time in the Lower World, another level of reality. Results of working with totems can include strengthened health and psychic wellbeing, learning, and protection.
Totems have their own qualities and characteristics. They choose us, not the other way around, depending on those things they realize we need to learn or expand, or qualities we need to diminish. Even helping spirits have qualities we have to learn to govern: for example, Badger is a great healer and protector but can have a snappish, hasty temper if out of balance!
Other Helping Spirits, sometimes acting as Teachers and Mentors, usually are to be found in the Upper World, a different level of reality. Frequently these Helping Spirits take the form (show themselves to us) of humans: a grandfatherly or grandmotherly figure of wisdom. They can be symbolic of specific civilizations, or may show up as a particular personage you have heard about before: a wise person of renown.
With spirits of both Upper and Lower Worlds, there is an active wish to teach, protect, and support us. However, we must deliberately make the effort to call them to us by going to the places they inhabit and asking for them to make themselves known to us. We always retain our power of Choice when we make decisions to adopt their suggestions; we never lose personal sovereignty.
With all Helping Spirits, we need to honor their teaching ways and millennia of experience. It is considered childish and very impolite to announce to one’s friends “I have Buffalo as a helper, “ etc. without the express agreement and permission of the helping spirit. You will become increasingly aware of your vanity traps and lack of manners if you possess these things. Man is not #1 on the Importance Hit Parade!
There is a practice called Journeying: this is literal travel to the other worlds, achieved using “repetitive percussive sound” such as drum-sound or rattling. We can also visit the non-physical, spiritual aspect of our physical, Middle World that we customarily inhabit.
Traditionally, the Drum is ‘hot’ and is good at transporting us downward, and the Rattle is said to be ‘cool’ and takes us upward. Drumsound can defuse a situation and rattling can ‘clear the path’, as well as calling rain.
All of this is real and has been operating for millennia.
