Update August 11 - The Governors Island ferries may be very crowded on the day of the walk due to the Jazz Picnic. We will be boarding the 11:00 ferry, if the line is long just get in line and board the ferry and we will meet up on the island. When you get off the ferry look for the restrooms that will be on your right as you begin to walk up the hill, we will meet in the small plaza right outside the doors that lead to the rest rooms. I will be wearing a garish orange hat.
We will leave the island on the 2:00 ferry to Brooklyn; again there will be a long line for the ferry, so we may have to line up early. We will take a quick walk around the island and try to leave plenty of time to view the Jazz Picnic. We should arrive at the end of the walk at City Hall Park around 4:30.
Parts of the walk will be in open sun with no shade, please bring a hat and sunscreen.
About 9 miles total walking. We will spend about 3 hours on the island, first touring Fort Jay and Castle Williams and then walking the island and viewing the Jazz Picnic. We will break for lunch on the island; bring your lunch or try the food trucks. About 5 miles total walking on the island.
Then, we will take another (free) ferry from Governor's Island to Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and walk along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 1, walk under the Brooklyn Bridge and past Jane's Carousel, then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan, ending our walk at City Hall Park. About 4 miles total walking from the ferry to City Hall.
Feel free to join us just for Governor's Island and take the ferry back to Manhattan on your own. If you do not want to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge you can join us as we walk to the bridge and catch the subway in Brooklyn.
MEET: at 10:30 a.m. at the Battery Maritime Building located at 10 South Street, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and take the 11:00 (free) ferry to Governor's Island.
