Happy New Year Shut Up & Write! Silicon Valley

I have scheduled our first 2012 meetups starting January 10. Looking forward to seeing you there.

I thought I would take this opportunity to summarize what we accomplished in 2011.

This time last year Shut Up & Write! Silicon Valley was just a gleam in Rennie’s and my eyes. Then on February 8, 2011, Rennie sent an email to the approximately 1,000 members of the Shut Up & Write! San Francisco group announcing our existence. About 35 of their members signed up with our Silicon Valley group and we were off and running. Our first formal meetup was on February 17. Four people attended.

We hosted 119 meetups in 2011, and we now have 147 members. In the last few months, our members have become increasingly active hosting several special events including a night at the theater, Writing with Wine meetups and marathon sessions. Members have also scheduled impromptu events on their own to simply get in more writing time, and what’s better than writing with friends. I hope members continue this trend of taking the initiative to get more writing done with friends and having fun in the process.

Our leadership team has grown from two to six, and in the coming year I hope to spread the leadership duties more evenly as I am becoming involved in other projects in addition to Shut Up & Write! Silicon Valley. Thanks to the platform organizing meetups requires very little effort.

In the coming year, we encourage members to schedule meetups on their own to share with other members their favorite writing locations or to try a meetup location closer to your home or work. I will be more than willing to help.

We have established solid meetup locations in San Jose and Mountain View. We also have regular meetups in Redwood City where I live, and last month we had our first meetup in Cupertino at the lovely Bitter+Sweet Coffee Bar. In the coming weeks, we will be trying a meetup at Philz Coffee Shop in downtown Palo Alto.

I want to thank all of our members for their encouragement, help and friendship because it was you who are responsible for what we have accomplished. I just wanted a few people to write with. I am looking forward to this year and all that it will bring.
