Kayak Safety Training Course

Sat 3/30, Kayak Safety Training Course: As many of you may have noticed, our group has grown to over 900 members strong, and counting!  It’s important that we keep our kayak trips safe and enjoyable for all. It is obvious that we need more members planning trips, and these trips need to be done in a safe and efficient manner.  The purpose of this training is to help make our trips a little safer and more organized, and perhaps find some great trip leaders to help introduce the sport of kayaking in a safe way! Joe Crespi, owner of First Coast Outfitters, will be the main instructor.  He is an ACA L4 Open Water instructor/ACA endorsed Rolling Coach, and has been working in the paddle sports industry for over 15 years.  Depending upon the number of people who sign up, he may bring additional instructors to help him.  Please note that we need a minimum of 10 attendees for this event in order to enjoy the much lower pricing (check out the normal costs at First Coast Outfitters website!), and for safety reasons, the event is capped at 20.

We will launch our kayaks at the Ribault Club launch area located at 11241 Fort George Road, Jacksonville, FL. (The marker on the map is a general location....continue on the road and you will come to the parking lot and main building.  The launch site is at the end of the dirt road just past the main building on the right.)   We will meet at 9 am at the Club's launch site, drop off our kayaks, park our cars in the parking lot and then get on the water!  There is a quiet lagoon off the main stream of the Intracoastal where the actual training will take place.  The course lasts a good 6 hours, which seems like a long time, but trust me, it goes by really fast when you are having fun, and you will have fun!!  Oh, and bring lunch or some snacks as Joe does allow a few breaks!

The cost of this training course is $40.00 per person.  TO REGISTER AND PAY FOR THIS EVENT, PLEASE CALL JOE CRESPI DIRECT AT[masked] ON OR BEFORE MARCH 23RD. Payment will be made through Joe over the telephone via credit card/debit card. If you do not own a kayak or some of the equipment, it will be provided by Joe through his business (FCO), including kayaks, free of charge, so don’t let the lack of equipment stop you from learning a new sport!  YOU MUST CALL JOE CRESPI IF YOU NEED EQUIPMENT RENTAL AT LEAST 1 WEEK PRIOR TO THE EVENT (904)[masked]

Focus Of the course:  Strokes and Maneuvers, Self and Assisted Rescues, Tides & Currents, Weather, Group Management, Emergency Procedures

MUST HAVE FOR CLASS (equipment available through Joe) Kayak, Paddle, PFD (personal flotation device/life jacket), Whistle, Paddle Float, Tow Rope, Pump

I took this course last October and learned quite a bit and had loads of fun.  If you have any questions or need any directions, please call the Leader:  Karen Montgomery   [masked]) or send me a message.

Wow...what a beeeeeautiful day!! Thanks to Joe for adapting his regular safety course to suit those new to the sport....it was a fun day! And thanks to those of you who took a chance on not falling in!! Water was not exactly refreshing, trust me! Will work on hosting another class when the water is much warmer so the rescue instructions can be given, perhaps in July or August. I am so glad everyone had fun...that was the goal...fun while learning safety!!

Karen, My friend that has signed up to attend with me has left two messages for Joe with no return call, and she has called three other times. Any suggestions?

    March 28, 2013

    • Karen M M.

If she left messages before the 23rd, I may be able to persuade Joe. I have put in a call and hopefully Joe will call back, but since your friend did not register through Joe before March 23rd as instructed in the write up, it is now too late for this class.

Karen, I just got off the phone with Joe and he was only accepting 10 for this class. Class is full.

Originally the class was set up for 20, with the registration instructions boldly set out in the writeup. The March 23rd deadline and Joe's info were put in the original write up because that was the way Joe wanted it set up so that he could be sure to have the required equipment and assistance for the 30th, and make payment easier. As of yesterday only 9 had done so, with one possible cancellation and one other possible from before the deadline. Therefore, Joe decided that since the deadline date had passed, he would cap the class at 10 so he could handle it himself. If enough people are still interested, another class can always be planned.

The deadline to register and pay for this event has passed. I have checked with Joe as to the head count for this event. Although 20+ signed up for this event, only 9 (including me) have registered with Joe and paid. Joe has graciously agreed to do the training on Saturday even though the head count is less than 10. Please be at the launch site by 9 am so we can get out on the water by 10 am. I look forward to paddling with y'all !!!!

Just a reminder for those who have signed up for this event, but have not yet called Joe Crespi to register & pay....the deadline is March 23rd. This event must have at least 10 registered members by that date or it may be cancelled. There is also a waiting list, so it is important to register as soon as possible or if you feel you will not be able to go, please remove your name so another may register. I welcome any comments or questions regarding this event. Thanks, y'all!!

    March 13, 2013

    • Karen M M.

Uh...that is Joe, not Chris...Chris is another one of Joe's instructors also. But, for this event, ask for Joe Crespi. Sorry for the mistake!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
