Boating and Fishing at Lake Sampson, Starke, FL

  • Aug 24, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Lake Sampson Event

Sat 8/24, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Boating and Fishing at Lake Sampson, Starke, FL: Come out to Lake Sampson for a day of boating, fishing, and grilling on a  ½ acre lake lot and dock on the south side of the Lake Sampson. The lake is located a few miles southwest of Starke, FL off US301. The lake is about 2 miles in diameter with deep water in the center and shallow water around the perimeter with lily pads, cypress trees, and lots of water birds. There are scenic places to canoe or kayak around the perimeter, including a canal to adjacent Lake Crosby and a canal that ends at a dam to Sampson creek.

All types of boats are welcome. Motorized boats can be launched at the county boat ramp on the east side of lake; canoes, kayaks and rafts can be put on the water from the dock (although it is 600 feet long so you may want a helper or a wheeled cart). The bass fishing is great! There will be a water ski boat there (with skis, knee board, inner-tube, and air chair) for anyone young and brave enough to give it a try! A paddle wheel boat and water-volleyball net will be available; or you if you feel lazy, you can bring your own floating mat, raft, etc...

There is shade for picnicking and two charcoal grills so bring whatever you want to grill along with picnic food and drinks. We will cookout around noon. Bring a lawn chair, your swim suit, towels, sunscreen, bug repellent, and whatever else you need. There will be a port-i-pot (chemical) in the garage and running water for rinsing (but not drinking).  Drop in whenever and stay as long as you want.  Leaders are Susyq [masked]) and Vicky [masked])

Driving directions to Susyq's lake lot at 9541 SW 136th St, Starke, FL 32091 :

You can take I-10 to US301 to Starke OR I-295 to Blanding Blvd south on SR21 to SR16  to 301 in Starke-

From downtown Starke continue south on US 301  for 2.8 miles .

Turn right onto Co Rd 225/SW Co Rd 227  for  1.2 mi

Turn right onto SW Co Rd 225 for  3.1 mi

(after you cross over the railroad tracks, skip the first entrance that is very muddy and go 0.4 mi more to the second entrance to subdivision to  dirt lane marked "Private Road")

Turn right onto SW 136th St for  0.5 mi

Destination will be on the left. Look for chain link fence with yellow concrete block garage.

Driving directions to county boat ramp on East side of lake if you are launching boat there:

From US 301 in Starke, turn right (West) on State Road 100.  Drive  about 2 miles until see sign for the "Slab", which is a bait shop and tavern.

Turn left on the paved road (SW 75th Ave) and drive another mile until it dead ends at boat ramp.    At the boat ramp, the canal divides to Lake Rowel (under rail road bridge) or to Lake Sampson (to the right).  You can leave your vehicle at boat ramp for the day and paddle or motor over to my dock.  At the end of the canal to Sampson, turn left and go parallel to shore towards SW side of lake.  There are two docks close together that both have silver car ports on them.  Mine is the second one where all the action is at!!!  See map for approximate location or email [masked] for a copy.

I finally figured out how to share the link for the videos on dropbox.com so I added the one for last month's day at Lake Sampson on 8-14-2013.

I called an exterminator today and he eliminated a volley-ball sized hornets' nest underneath the dock. He says they are gone now. So is my facial swelling after 3 shots at the urgent care clinic Saturday night (which hurt more than the stings!). I'm sorry so many people got stung and that I wasn't aware of it before the event. But then again, this is an outdoor club which brings us some unpredictability and suspense....

Sounds like the nest was huge. Glad your swelling went down, sorry it required shots. You were a trooper, continuing on even after your stings.

Susyq, thank you for hosting the event at Lake Sampson yesterday. Hope you will do it again; so, I can get there early and try my feet/legs at waterskiing. Or, maybe we could make it a camping trip. I got home this evening and tried to download my pictures, but it is a new camera, and I did not have any luck -- will try to get them posted within a day or two. Thanks again!

Thanks Susyq for hosting the event. I had a great time skiing with you and I am very happy to have a new friend that also is a water skier. We will have to go again soon. I apologize for not staying and helping to clean up but I had a family dinner to attend. I hope we can go skiing again soon!!!!

I enjoyed boating and talking with all of you. Thanks to Miller and David for also bring their boats. It was fun to ski with some accomplished skiers/boat drivers and share a sport I love with others. One person caught a fish off the dock, too! The grillers cooked up succulent fish, steak, pork, etc. Post your photos when you can. Let's do it again (after I send an exterminator out there). Too bad we had some uninvited guests (hornets), but it was a stinging good time!

If anybody needs help setting up or launching boats. Let me know. I'm with thin 30 minutes and can be there early.

    August 23, 2013

    • Steve

Susyq has a post that she could use help launching her ski boat around 8:30. If you can be there, call Susyq at (904)[masked]

      August 24, 2013

  • Eric

Alot depends on weather...if I come I will bring my two hobie kayaks.

    August 23, 2013

    • SusyQruiser

Saturday's weather forecast calls for more sun in morning, more showers in afternoon, so earlier is better. If they are passing, we can wait them out. If not, it might become a shorter day.

I hate I'm going to this this event. Love to fish! Let's plan this again!

    Carpool?
Reply to this comment if you want to find someone to car pool with. The link to google map above is accurate. I will be getting there early (between 8 - 8:30 )with my ski boat and go directly to the boat ramp and boat to my dock. David may do the same with his fishing boat. We could use some helpers with launching boats. A good location for early car pool is next to the McDonald's in Orange Park on Park St. (Hwy 17) across from the greyhound race track (in a empty parking lot between McDonalds and Wells Fargo, just south of Wells Road). Time: between 6:45 and 7:00 am. Anyone interested?

If the Ghosts don't get me on Friday night's Ghost Pub Tour, I'll try to show up at 6:45. I am not usually an early morning person.... so, don't wait for me :-)

Any kayak rental places in starke you like?

    August 15, 2013

    • SusyQruiser

I don't see any kayak rental places in Starke. You could look in Orange Park/Middleburg or places serving Lake Kingsley for next closest. Some members are bringing more than one kayak so you could ask them about trying it out.
