Battle of Olustee Re-enactment-TIME CHANGE

Sun. 2/16, 9:00am, Battle of Olustee Re-enactment: TIME CHANGE! We will meet at McDonalds at 705 Chaffee Rd. S (off I-10) at 9:00am. The battlefield is just ½ hour away on I-10. The re-enactment takes place at 1:30pm but there is lots to see at the festival which is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the battle. Food and beverage vendors should be at the scene for lunch. There is a $10.00 admission fee.
A brief history of the Battle of Olustee on February 20, 1864. In February 1864, the commander of the Department of the South, Maj. Gen. Quincy A. Gillmore, launched an expedition into Florida to secure Union enclaves, sever Rebel supply routes, and recruit black soldiers. Brig. Gen. Truman Seymour moved deep into the state, occupying, destroying, and liberating, meeting little resistance. On February 20, he approached Brig. Gen. Joseph Finegan’s 5,000 Confederates entrenched near Olustee. One infantry brigade pushed out to meet Seymour’s advance units. The Union forces attacked but were repulsed. The battle raged, and as Finegan committed the last of his reserves, the Union line broke and began to retreat. Finegan did not exploit the retreat, allowing most of the fleeing Union forces to reach Jacksonville. www.battleofolustee.org/battle.html.
We can decide if we want to have dinner together after the re-enactment. Leader: Tim S., [masked]. As a courtesy, please call Tim if your plans should change and you are unable to attend.
A "guest release and Indemnity Agreement" form must be signed for each event. Blank waivers will be available at the event. However, please help reduce registration time prior to the event by printing the liability waiver (Guestwaiver.pdf) and turn in your completed /signed form to the trip leader at the event. The guest release is not required for members who have signed the annual waiver and paid $15 annual fee members are covered by our supplemental Insurance policy.

Well, the show of shows was great. I sat next to a gentleman with a Scottish kilt on. He said not to look up his kilt... I said "you have the wrong plumbing for me". So sorry I did not connect with everyone there.

As in the past, it was a pleasure to have you drive a group of us to an event. Wasn't it a treat to have the kilted gent on the bus entertain us? The event itself was very interesting as the participants are steeped in history you never learn in books. Love that Confederate Flag!!!

It was well done - lots of noise (cannons and rifles). The costumes were great and the 'actors' were really into their roles. We got some terrific speeches on the war, the weapons and the battle from them.
