Grant Ranch 3C Hike and Picnic

  • Nov 23, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join the Black Mountain Hiking Section and the Loma Prieta Sierra Singles for a strenuous 3C hike and a pre-Thanksgiving potluck picnic at Grant Park on Nov. 23rd, 2013.

For the picnic, bring a treat to share, your favorite beverage, and your own eating/drinking utensils.

The hike covers 12+ miles and 2,300+ ft cumulative elevation gain. We will start at the Grand Lake trailhead and follow the Halls Valley Trail into the foothills. We will visit Antler Point, the highest point in the park, followed by our potluck picnic at the historic hunters' cabin currently under restoration. The cabin was built in the 1800s and Joseph D. Grant had it renovated in the 1920s when his pal, Herbert Hoover, became the president of the U.S. He did away with the outhouse and added a flushing toilet.

Carpool locations:
9:00 a.m. at James Lick High School at the corner of Alum Rock Ave. and White Rd.. From Hwy 680 or Hwy 101, take Alum Rock exit eastbound. Turn left on White and left into the parking lot. Park under the solar panels.
8:30 a.m. No-host at Page Mill Park and Ride
8:15 a.m. No-host at Edgewood Park and Ride

Time to meet at the trailhead: 9:30 for a 9:45 a.m. start

Directions to the trailhead: Take Hwy 101 or Hwy 680 to Alum Rock Avenue eastbound in San Jose. Turn right on Mt. Hamilton and travel approximately 8 miles to reach the park entrance. Go past the first entrance to your right. Do not turn there. Park in the second entrance to your left. Simply follow the Grant Lake trailhead sign.

What to bring: This hike is quite exposed, so plan accordingly. You need at least two litres of water, sun protection, snacks/lunch, layered clothing, sturdy boots and hiking poles.

Heavy rain cancels this hike.
