  • Sam McDonald Park

Pescadero Creek Rd, Loma Mar, Ca (map)

    37.276306 -122.291176

  • Send an email to the leaders (listed in the description below) for exact location .
  • If you have always been curious about the Hiker's Hut in Sam McDonald Park make your reservation for one of two hikes to the hut, where Loma Prieta Sierra Singles will gather for hot cider, snacks and socializing followed by an optional 6 mile loop hike back to the parking lots.

Hike #1 is a 1.2 mile walk to the hut. Hike #2 is a 2.7 mile hike to the hut. Both hikes to the hut have approximately 600 ft. of elevation gain.

The loop hike from the Hiker's Hut back to the parking lots will be approximately 6 miles with 1600 ft. of elevation gain. Those who chose to explore the area around the hut instead or lounge on the deck will return to the parking lots on the same trail or one similar in length to the one they hiked in on.

What to bring: Finger food snacks to share, a cup for cider, water, layered clothing and sun protection, $$$ for carpools and parking fees (where applicable).

To attend: In addition to clicking "Yes" to RSVP you must send an email to co-leaders Jay De Wolf, [masked] OR Marilyn Stockdale Green, [masked] indicating which hike to the hut you want to go on. You will receive directions to the trailhead you've selected and information about carpool locations with your reservation confirmation.

    Heavy rain cancels.

To attend one of Sierra Club events, there is NO ADMISSION FEE, unless specified.

Due to the forecast for more much-needed rain this weekend and safety concerns related to muddy, slippery, steep trails, we are canceling the Sam McDonald Park Hiker's Hut event scheduled for Sunday, February 9. We were really pleased with the amount of interest in the event – between Meetup and Loma Prieta Sierra Singles we had close to 60 signed up!!! -- so we will definitely reschedule it when the skies clear. Stay tuned. . . Jay de Wolf and Marilyn Stockdale Green

Any estimated time we will return to the carpooling site?

    January 29, 2014

Once I have all of your information I will be able to give you an estimate of when you could plan to be back at the trailhead. The primary variable is whether you plan to just hike to the hut and out or whether you plan to go on the optional 6 mile loop trail back to the trailhead. Estimating when you will be back to a carpool site is tough -- we'll be suggesting three --and your return time will depend on which one you choose and how much hiking those you carpool with plan to do. I'm sorry I can't be more specific/helpful.

That sounds like so much fun, but I am still in a Darth Vader boot (after being in a cast) from rupturing my achilles tendon Nov. 30. I so so so look forward to hiking again! Have fun. Cat
