Food, Sunshine!!! & Hikes To & Around the Hiker's Hut, Sam McDonald Park

If you have always been curious about the Hiker's Hut in Sam McDonald Park make your reservation for one of two hikes to the hut, where Loma Prieta Sierra Singles will gather for lemonade, lunch, snacks and socializing followed by an optional 6 mile loop hike back to the parking lots. The weather is predicted to be warm, dry and beautiful -- perfect for enjoying this great venue. You must reserve your space for this event by sending an email to one of the leaders (whose contact info is listed below) in addition to your Meetup RSVP.

Hike #1 is a 1.2 mile walk to the hut. Hike #2 is a 2.7 mile hike to the hut. Both hikes to the hut have approximately 600 ft. of elevation gain.

The loop hike from the Hiker's Hut back to the parking lots will be approximately 6 miles with 1600 ft. of elevation gain. Those who chose to explore the area around the hut instead or lounge on the deck will return to the parking lots on the same trail or one similar in length to the one they hiked in on.

What to bring: Your lunch, finger food snacks to share, a cup for beverages (provided by LPSS), water, layered clothing and sun protection, $$$ for carpools and parking fees (where applicable).

To attend: Send an email to Marilyn Stockdale Green, [masked] indicating which hike to the hut you want to go on. You will receive directions to the trailhead you've selected and information about carpool locations with your reservation confirmation.

Leaders: Jay de Wolf, [masked] and Marilyn Stockdale Green, [masked].

I can meet at either carpool site, but prefer the Lucky's location. Is anybody else meeting there at 10am?

Justine, you are welcome to join us in the carpool if you are still coming, but I do not see your name on the list anymore.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to cancel. Need to help out a friend on Sunday. Hope to catch up with everyone on another outing!

Very sorry to cancel so late but I just realized that I am the wrong age for this hiking group. My friend and I are 50 plus. From looking at the schedule it seems like LPSS has the best events! Can anyone suggest what hiking group we can join?

This is an LPSS event as mentioned in the first line of the event description. Both of the organizers are 50+ and, in fact, I am 60+. Please feel free to change your RSVP back to "yes."

    Hello,
I have been wanting to visit this area and glad to see this event this Sunday. How easy and/or difficult are these hikes? Can anyone let me know if my healing ankle got injured one month ago while dancing a Ujam class can handle any of these hikes?
Thanks in advance for your attention and input and hope that I can make it there to meet and see all of you.

Only you know the extent of your ankle injury and can judge whether you can handle either of the hikes to the hut. As explained in the write up, both hikes climb approximately 600 feet en route to the hut. Hike #1 is 2.4 miles roundtrip and Hike #2 is 5.4 miles roundtrip. The optional 6 mile loop has a net gain of 1600 feet in elevation which may well be too strenuous for someone recovering from an injury, but again only you can be the judge of that.

Thanks for your reply. I will get some more info/research and make a good decision.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
