9 miles, Saratoga Gap Loop, Castle Rock

Join me for a 9-mile loop in Castle Rock Park, beginning at Saratoga Gap instead of the main entrance. This hike will be a moderately fast paced hike, stopping only at intersections to regroup. We first head south along Skyline Trail and will cut over Lohgry Wood Trail and down to the backpacking camp for a quick lunch. Bathroom and water is only available at this stop. We head out Frog Flat Trail and over to Travertine Springs Trail for the climb back out to Saratoga Toll Road. Saratoga Toll Road was built to handle heavy wagons needing to get over the Santa Cruz Mountains so the remaining trail climbs gently for the last 3 miles. Hike is around 1800 feet in cumulative elevation gain. For self carpool sites please check the Loma Prieta Sierra Club activities calendar on their website. I will be driving from Felton so will not be at the carpool site.  Bring 2 liters of water, lunch, sun screen.  No bathroom or water at trailhead.   Email me with any questions.  Leader:  Sparky Harlan, [masked]

Beautiful location and good route. Hiking was way too fast for my taste. I had to focus too much on where my feet were landing to avoid stumbling or slipping, and less than I'd like on my surroundings. Taking a picture involved getting seriously behind and having to jog to catch up. At meet-up points, organizer waited until the last person arrived, and then headed out again. Only the faster people got a chance to rest. Now I know that hikes that call themselves moderate-fast are not for me.

I was expecting higher so it should be ok for an easy hike.

Rex is correct, we will meet at the paved parking lot at highway 9 and highway 35. If there is not enough parking we can caravan another 1.5 miles down to the dirt parking lot on Skyline Blvd. at the trailhead to Summit Rock.

I'm pretty sure she's meeting in the big paved lot across Hwy 9 from the Saratoga Gap OSP dirt parking area. If you're coming up Hwy 9, there's a stop sign at the top. At the stop sign, take a left (Hwy 35), then another quick left into the lot.
