This event is being scheduled as somewhat of an apology to the LARGE number of people who ended up on the waitlist for this event on July 7th. We did have a great time. So, I am putting this event on only for the meetup people and, of course, some of our Sierra Club members are also on meetup, so hopefully some of them will come also. I will limit this to 50 members this time as I am not comfortable leading a much larger group. To limit attendance I am not allowing guests. I will ask some of you to help out as rear and middle leaders so please come with a helpful attitude. The picking season was late this year and there still should be plenty of berries on the vines and I just called the “Ranch” to confirm this.
Always a fun & unique event! We’ve always had a nice crowd and great time doing this in the past that I thought I’d continue it for the seventh consecutive year. The day will start at our carpool points and proceed to Pescadero and Phipps Ranch. (Info on Phipps Ranch and recipes can be found at http://www.phippscountry.com/berries.htm) There we will pick olallieberries for about an hour and you may also tour their “Wild Bird” aviary and botanical nursery. If you don’t know what olallieberries are, come and find out. We will eat our lunch at the picnic tables at Phipps Ranch after we have purchased our berries. When lunch is over, we will go further south on highway 1 to Ano Nuevo and see the elephant seals. (Info on elephant seals can be found at http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1115 & http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=523) The male seals are molting at this time of year and we saw about 50 of them last year. This requires a walk/hike of about 3-4 miles round trip, about 25% of which is over sand dunes. There will be a special optional surprise treat at the end of our Ano Nuevo hike. Bring sunblock, your own lunch and something to share, water, a lightweight windbreaker, and walking shoes, perhaps a hat, $8-$10 for carpool and parking fee at Ano Nuevo($10/car), State parks parking pass if you have one, $3 for Phipps Ranch picking fee (if over 60, it’s free!), and $3/pound for olallieberries purchase. Meet @ 9:25 am at carpool #8 (Carl’s Jr. parking lot in shopping center SW corner of Homestead & Sunnyvale-Saratoga Ave) and 9:30 am at carpool #7 (Park & Ride at NE corner of Edgewood & 280) or at Phipps Ranch (2700 Pescadero Creek Rd in Pescadero) at ~10:40 am. Leader: Jack Borok [masked].
