Point Lobos Newcomer's Hike and Mapping Party

Open to everyone.  Bring your cameras.

New and prospective members are especially invited to enjoy 6 miles of gently rolling trails on this scenic new member hike at Point Lobos State Park near Carmel. We will be walking along the ocean bluffs and through the forest at an easy pace. There should be plenty of wildlife in the water and in the air. Get to know the Guadalupe Regional Group, Loma Prieta Chapter and Sierra Club. We will be meeting near the entrance station at 10am. We need to park outside on Highway 1 in order to meet at the entrance. There is no parking lot inside near the entrance. Suggested walk in donation $2. Two car pool locations: 8:30 AM at Los Gatos Municipal Parking Lot (Highway 9 between University Ave & Santa Cruz Ave, behind Chase bank). South County carpool meet at the McDonalds parking lot at the Gilroy Outlets at 9am. Hike leaders: Linda Barbosa[masked] and Shawn Britton[masked]

What are the plans for lunch? Dinner? I thought someone mentioned going to dinner at Phil's, but I could have gotten that mixed up from another event.

In case anyone else needs to carpool and also needs clarification regarding carpooling, could each person that will be at the Los Gatos carpool location confirm that they will be there? As of now, I plan to be there. Thanks.

Hi Shawn. Think I'am confuse. I was planning on meeting up @ the suggested spot in Los Gatos per the description. Then carpool from there. Is that not the case? Are we arranging our own carpool? I'am coming from San Jose.

Meet at the suggested spot in Los Gatos per the description for carpooling. That location is valid. Some people are arranging their own carpooling.

Is anyone coming from the south bay in CUpertino or SUnnyvale??

      August 29, 2012

I hate to get all official on everybody, but this is a good opportunity. The outing officially begins at the trail-head. Carpool transportation is at the sole risk of the participants, both driver and passengers, even if they are the leaders or staff of the outing or activity.
Participants are advised in advance that the Club assumes no responsibility for carpools.
Leaders will not assign which cars participants ride in. Leaders must limit their involvement to making participants aware of who needs, and who is offering, rides. (This precaution limits exposure to liability as a result of carpooling activity.)

I am coming from Willow Glen and would like to meet in Los Gatos for the car pool. If I am not able to car pool, I can drive and follow. Is the Los Gatos Municipal parking lot the same as LG coffee roasting company? The mapping party is a separate thing afterwards? Do I have to confirm my attendance for that now or can I just attend after the hike if I wish to join?

    August 29, 2012

    • Shawn B.

The Los Gatos Municipal parking lot is not the same as LG coffee roasting company. I will be at the municipal parking lot, as stated in the write-up. The mapping party is a separate optional thing afterwards. If you ride with me, allow an hour for the post hike mapping party at the coffee shop. No confirmation required for the mapping party. Just show up!

I'd like to carpool with a good driver; my car has a lot of miles on it and it also does low mpg. I can meet in Los Gatos or San Jose.

how much do i chip in for gas if i wanna ride in a carpool? I have a State Park pass that is good for parking inside the park -- the coast is some distance from the entrance.

    August 18, 2012

    • Shawn B.

The trail head we use is at the Route 1 entrance. As for how much you chip in, you have to negotiate that with the driver.

Olive Oyl, what I do is to add the total number of miles traveled round trip, then divide by the mileage my car does, which gives the number of gallons used. After that I multiply by the per-gallon price paid to fill up, which gives the total gasoline expenditure. Then I divide by the number of people in the car.

Hi, I would love to go except I would want to carpool, and you don't go by Santa Cruz it sounds like (the southern carpool spot is Gilroy), so don't want to drive by myself. If anyone else is going from Santa Cruz (probably not), I can either drive or share gas and go in your car. I signed up for a class that day, but will get my money back and go if I hear from someone within the next two days that you can carpool with me. Thanks. Catharine (Cat)
