Black Rock Rendezvous!

A great first trip to the Black Rock! Actual meeting location probably the Cassidy Mine Site. Several hundred people will be meeting for a variety of tours, activities, and speakers in the Black Rock Desert about 100 miles north of Reno. Hot Springs Visits too! We’ll have a Dutch Oven cook-off, kid’s activities, tours to various areas, and expert speakers on the history, geology, and activities of the area. Leader is very familiar with the area.

Bring your HAM Radio, there will be lots of HAM activity! Contact David KD7YIM for area repeater info. We normally camp on the edge of the Playa about 3 miles off the pavement, easy access, RV’s & Trailers OK but no hook-ups, dumps etc except in Gerlach. Easy, Dogs on leash. For more info go to but no addl info posted as of March.

Dutch Oven cookoff &  Potluck Saturday night, bring your own food for the community grill Sunday night, porta potties, primitive camping, be sure to bring sufficient water, minimum 1  1/2 gals per person/per day advised.

Great Event, lots of tours to neat places, good food, good weather. But I couldn't tell that Any of my 12+/- Meetup RSVP's attended. The only response I had to my Ping to confirm attendance were 2 prompt cancellations. What's going through people's heads that they'll RSVP to an event like this and then not show up? From the leader's point of view it's very disheartening! And it's part of the reason I'm so firm on confirming and with special RSVP requirements etc. This isn't an open-ended invitation to a coffee shop in Reno, it's a weekend campout that requires a 100 mile drive. What, as leader I'm supposed to make the drive and wonder if anybody will show up? If I hadn't been going to the event anyway, I'd be really bent out of shape. I guess that's why airlines and hotels want payment in advance! Next time I may require a lien on the firstborn or a refundable deposit from all the Yes RSVP's! Joke! Or should I start a "no-show blacklist"? David

Go to Gerlach via route of choice. The Friends of Black Rock office is at 320 Main and will have a map to the camp site in the window. Gerlach is a tiny town so you can't miss Main St. You can also take Highway 34 north out of Gerlach and follow the signs onto the playa which will be about 3 miles north of the pavement on the West side of the playa. There will be quite a bit of traffic so you'll probably be following somebody who knows the way! DB

Is this day trip or is it to much for 1 day?

Jim, there's a lot to see and do at the Rendezvous. Tours leave fairly early. Best to overnight it, but sure, you can go out and back in a day. That's a lot of driving though.
