Panamint Dunes Photo Backpack

Imagine this: You backpack to a location near Panamint Dunes on Saturday afternoon (about 4 miles), set up camp. Shoot the evening light and Moonrise without worrying about walking back to the parking area. Share an evening under a 98% Moon and stars*.

In the morning, catch Moonset and first light on the mountains and the dunes, then break camp and have a leisurely stroll back to your car. After the trip, you might stay in the area for evening photography and overnight at Panamint Resort (camp or motel - reservations advised).
Monday meander home. You'll be in time for New Year's Eve festivities.

This trip is properly permited under the Sierra Club's agreement with the National Parks service.

* Please note

    • This backpack destination has no local water.  The leaders will make a pre-trip water drop, but each participant should plan to carry more water than usual for a one-night outing.
    • The trail is predominately soft sand on an incline from trailhead to the dune (less than 1000' of gain).

    Nice photos. We went tent camping at Furnace Creek Campground Jan 2 to 5 this year, but never got a chance to drive to Panamint Springs.

    We have two offline reservations, so we are officially full. If you are interested and can be flexible, add your name to the waitlist. You might still get on the trip!

    In addition to the participants you see to the right, we have John Baker and John Boyle. So only 3 spots left.
