Imagine this: You backpack to a location near Panamint Dunes on Saturday afternoon (about 4 miles), set up camp. Shoot the evening light and Moonrise without worrying about walking back to the parking area. Share an evening under a 98% Moon and stars*.
In the morning, catch Moonset and first light on the mountains and the dunes, then break camp and have a leisurely stroll back to your car. After the trip, you might stay in the area for evening photography and overnight at Panamint Resort (camp or motel - reservations advised).
Monday meander home. You'll be in time for New Year's Eve festivities.
This trip is properly permited under the Sierra Club's agreement with the National Parks service.
* Please note
- This backpack destination has no local water. The leaders will make a pre-trip water drop, but each participant should plan to carry more water than usual for a one-night outing.
- The trail is predominately soft sand on an incline from trailhead to the dune (less than 1000' of gain).
