It was a fun day with my first meet up. Very warm and friendly group, the leaders made sure of our safety. It was quite a work out walking on the loose rocks, and was well worth it!

Just sending a message to those still on the wait list. There appear to be 3 slots available. If you are still interested in attending please click on the 'Join' button. It seems that you should automatically be moved up to the 'Going' list but that is not the case. When you join, Allan will send you a trip sheet with details about the trip. If you do not get them this evening, send an email and I will send it to you if you supply me with your email address. I will check email at 11pm this evening as well as 9am tomorrow to see if anyone needs information.

For me to send you the trip sheet directly I need you not to hide your email address. Otherwise I will send out a link to my cloud drive.

    Sorry I can't make it

I'd love to come join you this Saturday but will have to pass. Hence the wait list is now open for 2 spots

Thanks Allan, Wasn't sure how the que moved. I was waiting for the email announcement and jumped on, pushed the red buton to join and nothing happened. Then the waitlist went to 8 and the trip was full. Wasn't sure if I was beat to the join button by a few seconds, or if it had to do when you signed up. May go on my own the next day, if the weather is overcast you may have some perfect light.

I guess I am wrong about first come first served from the waiting list or the settings I used, I just sent you the trip sheet.

      February 6, 2013

    • Stephanie

I was persistant and was able to join. Looks like the time before I was seconds away. Looking forward to the shoot. I may bring a Lens Baby or PC lens to play with as well.

Does the wait list fill as people have joined it? IF that is the case, since I am the last to get current with this sign up system, I might as well give up on this idea and just go sailing for the day!

    February 5, 2013

    • Allan D.

Stephanie- Sorry, it seem this trip is very popular. Some people have changed their minds and said they are not going. People on the wait list are getting in. Because you came on to the wait list at or near the end, your chances are not as good.

I had my heart set on this meeting (and my first) and to meet everyone. However, i've been notified that I have to work. How do I unreserve myself so someone on the waiting list can go?

    February 5, 2013

    • Allan D.

Chuck, when you log into Meetup, go to the Sierra Club Camera Meetup site and click "Change RSVP". I will change it for you this time.

      February 5, 2013

  • Allan D.

If you are just getting on the attend list, send me a note and I will send you the trip writeup.

    February 3, 2013

  • Allan D.

Ebie, the write-up may have instructions or there may be a signup/RSVP button on the page. Because the tip is very popular, it has a wait list. I see you are on the going list, Alison will send you more info just before the trip. Participants, including wait list, if you decide you can't go, take yourself off the list, so someone else can have a chance to go!

Hi Allan, I got the trip ticket last week when you send out the email. Thank you.

I just noticed Sunny's remark about not having a macro lens. Alison and Bill can address this better than me, but here's my two cents.

Most digital cameras have macro settings. Take a look at your camera manual or the settings on your camera (look for the flower icon). My better camera slips into macro format when auto-focus recognizes a close-up subject; a little flower icon pops up in the display corner. If you really don't have macro, don't despair. Use a long lens for OK results. Focus carefully then crop to get the look of a close-up and isolate the subject. Just don't expect to make big prints.

The thing that is going to be trickiest to handle in macro format or otherwise is reflection. A polarizing filter will help but I think Alison's method is best. She carefully casts a shadow on the water's surface. It is a trick to block the reflection without blocking the light on your subject. It takes practice. Bring a board or a folding reflector.

Hope we get on the trip!

Yikes! I am number 12 on the wait list. If you are on the trip but can't make it, PLEASE cancel in time for the wait-listed to move up. Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Just want to respond to many of the questions you all sent. The trip will start at 1:00pm sharp. (Allan could you please correct the time.)Please arrive a half hour early to get your gear ready, jacket on, sign in with the leaders. We will leave without you if you are late. The lowest tide occurs at 2:54pm. The tide will be minus 1.4ft. This is one of the best low tides of the year. We will not be going underwater but you are welcome to bring an underwater housing for your camera and dip it below the surface of the water. As you can see this is a popular trip. Please show up because others will not be able to take your place if you change your mind at the last minute. I will send a trip sheet with details one week before the trip. I look forward to a wonderful day!

Ah, got it now. Thank you Alison. Simply show up ready and properly suited up at 1:00 p.m and cancel if you can't make for the sake of of common courtesy. Sounds great and easy enough.

  • Winn K

I assume this is when the lowest tide is? Is a day with particularly low tide, or just average?
