Tubing the Ichetucknee River

This is a Florida classic which every nature-lover should do in their lifetime. We値l commune with the crystalline Ichetucknee River which flows about six miles through shaded hammocks and wetlands from the headspring which has been declared a National Natural Landmark.

We値l meet at 5.15 a.m. at the Gate Food Post at U.S. 1 and Highway 210 (about a 20-minute drive on U.S. 1 south of The Avenues) for the two-hour drive on back roads to Fort White where we値l rent tubes.

We値l then try and enter the north entrance of Ichetucknee Springs State Park and try and be part of the limited number of tubers that get to do the entire part of the river that can be tubed (this takes about 3 hours). If we get shut out for the entire run then we値l do two half-river runs.

Bring lunch, water, swimsuit, towel, sun tan lotion, a change of clothing, and snorkel face mask. Consider wearing a T shirt on the river if you burn easily.

Entrance to the Park is $5. per person and tubes rent for about $6. If you want to drive directly to Fort White then meet us at the intersection of U.S. 27 and 1st. Street in Fort White (the main intersection) at 7 a.m. Sierra Club members only please. Please RSVP here or to Leader Brian Paradise at [masked].

Fantastic as usual! Sorry I missed you guys, I waited a bi at the top, then swam down & looked around at midpoint before getting back in. Just in case, I was the goofy looking snorkeler with two masks on my back (found -em and turned in to lost & found at midpoint). After the last part, i looked again...couldn't find ya, but no worry, the water was great so i jumped back in and swam some more!

Had a great time. See you guys at the next one.

I missed the group as well. The raft that I rented was really cheap and came with a paddle. Swimming in the river was such a great experience. The park is HUGE! Starting at the North entrance I had to park my car at the South entrance and have them drive me back up there. I was a little confuse for a while about where to go. Thank god for GPS. I will definitely go back to it very soon with more of my friends and family.

It was well worth getting up early to tube the upper part of the river because we saw a large number of birds in the upper part and that part of the river had relatively few tubers on the water. The weather was perfect for a tubing experience.

FANTASTIC! I Swam the whole thing (I'm a swimmer/snorkeler) and went back and did another section, wonderful weather and less crowded than usual. Sorry I missed everyone, looked around, couldn't find you guys. hope you enjoyed it as much as I.
