Jacksonville Monthly Program - The Widerness Act of 1964

We will celebrate the anniversary of the Wilderness Act with Warren Anderson and Andy Miller of the Public Trust Environmental Legal Institute of Florida. The Wilderness Act was enacted to ensure that some wild lands in our country will be protected and preserved in their natural state.

The Wilderness Act included this definition:

“A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”

Andy and Warren will highlight the beauty of these pristine places and discuss how wild lands are designated and defined today, and, with population growth and new discoveries of fossil fuel sources in these lands, how our vigilant protection is increasingly vital!

Come and share Warren and Andy's passion and take away vital tools you can use to ensure our country's legacy.

Social time from 6:30-7:00. Program starts at 7:00 pm. Refreshments provided. Please bring your own cup to reduce waste in the landfill.

See a map to the church in the Files Section (under More at the top of the page).

I was able to collect 11 petitions for Water and Land Conservation, and four for Duval libraries. I also enjoyed the meeting, learned a lot.

The presentation helped the attendees to understand the concept of Wilderness as differentiated from other public lands designations. The meetings fullfill our mission to help our members to explore, enjoy and protect the planet. The program educated folks on the wilderness designation, proposed legislation to spoil it, and wilderness areas nearby. We also informed folks about how they can get involved in some of Jacksonville's timely enviro issues; and told them of some fun, free and informative activities. Our attendees' participation enhanced the platform offered by the meeting through their questions and interaction. Way better than getting the same info on TV or online.

Grandkids have preempted the meeting this evening. Papa sleepovers are not always scheduled far in advance; have to seize the opportunities as they arise.
