August 24 to 26, Our 2012 Waldo Lake Car Campout and Hiking Weekend

Islet Point

Why We're Camping Out

The Oregon Sierra Club Eastside Forest Committee has initiated a campaign to provide greater protection for the forested areas east of Waldo Lake, a beautiful region 35 miles southwest of Bend containing abundant old growth and roadless areas. Currently it is unprotected beyond its federal forest status. For more information on what we're proposing, look at our Keep Waldo Wild web page. This weekend car campout is designed to introduce you Waldo Lake’s environs and treat you to its plentiful attractions. We hope you’ll become as excited about preserving the area east and south of Waldo Lake as we are!

Who's Invited?

Everyone who cares about Waldo Lake and preserving an untrammeled old growth forest experience! Last year we had campers from the Juniper (Bend), Many Rivers (Eugene), and Marys Peak (Corvallis), and Columbia (Portland) Sierra Club Groups plus several new faces to all of us. So this year, we've reserved a bigger group campsite (see below) and hope to introduce even more people to the beauty of the area and to our campaign.

The 2012 Waldo Weekend Campout will be held August 24-26, Friday-Sunday, at the Shadow Bay Campground on the southern end of the lake. Group Site B, Sites 25 thru 43, is reserved for Friday and Saturday nights and will accommodate 60 to 120 people.

Because of the significant cost of reserving the Group campsite, you are being asked to pay $10 per person or $20 per vehicle with two or more campers for the entire weekend (two nights).

Your party will also be asked to share a campsite with other parties unless you have a large number (more than four) in your party. The campground has the usual Forest Service toilet and drinking water facilities, but no showers or electrical hookups.

There are additional single campsites available that accommodate 6 people each for $20 per night per campsite. You can reserve these campsites (you pay) through the recreation.gov - Shadow Bay website.

Will each camp site have a fire ring we can use? If so, I bet we should consider bring some firewood w/ us, correct? Or will we be collecting around 1 fire in the evening? (I'm bringing a Coleman camp stove, so I don't need it for cooking.)

From Oakridge, proceed east on Highway 58 for 25 miles to the Waldo Lake Road (Forest Road 5897). Continue on Waldo Lake Road for 6.5 miles to the Shadow Bay turnoff. Follow signs to Shadow Bay Campground.

Organizer: there's directions for people in Bend but not for those coming from Eugene. I could reverse the last few directions, but is that all I'd need to do? I don't want to mess up the directions, especially since I'm not driving.

Herman: That'd be super! Thank you! I just emailed you my contact info. We can connect another day, okay? (I'm pretty tired this evening.)

P.S. My van needs an expensive repair & is sitting dead right now. It's not that I'm unwilling to drive (quite the contrary), I just don't have a working vehicle presently!

Hi! I'm embarrassed to say I've never been to Waldo Lake! I'd dearly wish to go.....but I'd need a ride & my stuff picked up in SE Eugene. Will gladly share gas cost w/ driver & will be VERY appreciative! I'm very organized & will be timely & prompt for all that (aka and NOT be a pain in the you-know-what!).

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
