Hike and Historical Exploration of Montecito's Tea Gardens

Rare opportunity to explore this old Montecito estate. An easy, moderate, or strenuous hike (depending on how far you choose to go) up to the top ridges of and looping back down Chelham Canyon. About 2, 4 or 5 mrt and 500, 700' or 1350' altitude gain, respectively, whichever is chosen.

Hike open to members and on-members alike. The Sierra Club never charges a fee for it's hikes.

Meet either at the old gatehouse (680 East Mountain Drive at Cold Springs Junction) or at the B of A on upper State St. at 9am.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the amazing property we had the opportunity to hike on. Although I'm sure many people were not able to hear all of Keith's fun stories, those of us who did appreciated his shared experiences.

Juddy, It will depend on how long you stay with the group. The first part of the hike is on a paved driveway, but the later sections can be very rugged. So tennis shoes would be OK if you are only going as far as the arches, but if you plan on hanging in there for the entire hike, you should wear good sturdy hiking shoes.

    Hi Gerri,

The reason this is a rare opportunity is that the Tea Gardens is a private property and closed to the public year round. The property is only opened for visitors a few days per year. This is always a fun hike. The ruins of all the old water works are really quite amazing and when Kieth is the hike leader it is always an adventure.

Why is this a rare opportunity? Does someone have a "pass" to visit this part of the trail?
