Hike to Castle Point and Rainbow Falls

This hike combines woodland forest, beautiful streams, fantastic Pitch Pine landscapes, a waterfall, and fantastic views of the Hudson Valley.

The first portion of our trip is on the Mossy Glen Trail which follows the Peters Kill stream as it carves a beautiful path through the bedrock. We then turn onto Blueberry Run, aptly named for the expansive berry bushes that fill both sides of the trail. As the trail gains elevation we begin to see more rock outcroppings and Pitch Pines. Finally, we arrive at Castle Point, the highest overlook in the park. From here we can see the Gertrude’s Nose cliffs and amazing views of the Hudson Valley. We will stop here for lunch and enjoy the view.

Our return route follows a section of the Long Path to Rainbow Falls. We then continue on through beautiful landscapes until we arrive at the Lower Awosting Carriageway. We then have an easy 2 mile walk back to the parking area.

For those not familiar with the Shawangunk Ridge geology and flora, this trip will give you a thorough sampling and a chance to discuss what makes the Shawangunk Ridge one of the most unique environments in the United States.

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DETAILS.

Elevation gain: 700 ft.
Distance: about 6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm (approximate)

NOTE: If you are unable to make it after having signed up, please change your RSVP to Not Going. This is important. We do not want to be waiting for you if you are not coming.

Bring: hiking boots, 3 liters of water, snacks, lunch. Also consider insect repellent, sun glasses, sunblock, hat, personal first aid items (bandaids, medications, etc.)

There is an $8.00 parking fee per car so carpooling is recommended.

MEET AT THE LOWER AWOSTING PARKING LOT.
When you go through the main entrance, make an immediate right down a long drive to the Awosting Parking Lot. Do NOT drive up to the parking lot by the lake.

Those wishing to carpool can meet at the Trailways Bus Depot in New Paltz by 8:50 am. Please post a comment if you plan to carpool from there. I will be leaving at 9:00 am sharp. Contact each other if you are interested in carpooling from your home area. If you are coming by bus from NYC you will need to take the 7:00 bus to arrive at 8:35. Let leader know if you are taking the bus.

This is a carry-in, carry-out park. We will also follow leave-no-trace principles during the day.

Leader: Andy Moss. Questions? Call my home phone:[masked] or email me via my profile page by clicking on my photo above. I will send an email on July 11th with my Cell phone number in case you need to reach me on the day of the hike.

Hi Andy, I will be leading my own small going there. Hope to see you! The blueberries season just started, hopefully we all will get a taste of the wild blue berries as well as red raspberries. Maybe a taste of the poison ivy mix in there too!

It doesn't seem like anyone is passing Glen Rock, NJ. But if you do, I would appreciate it.

Hi. When you use the word "climb" is this rock scrambling or just using rocks as steps?

    July 3

    • Andy

Sorry if the wording was confusing. By climb I meant ascend... the trail goes up to Castle Point. There is no scrambling, just a regular hiking trail (with rocks as steps where needed)

      Perfect!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
