Distance: 6 miles.
Hike difficulty: easy/moderate
Hike Time: Approximately 6 hours (10:30 - 4:30)
We begin our hike on the carriageway along the south side of Minnewaska Lake and then turn onto the Millbrook Mountain carriageway. After a pleasant walk along the graveled road we pick up the beginning of the Gertrude's Nose trail. Along the way we will traverse beautiful woods, large rock outcrops and eventually find ourselves walking along beautiful, and expansive, white cliffs. From the cliffs we can enjoy views that look both down and across the Palmaghatt Ravine. We will enjoy our lunch at Gertrude's Nose with fantastic views of the Hudson Valley and Minnewaska Park.
After lunch we will continue along the trail a bit farther to a small tree that crosses the trail - a remnant of Hurricane Sandy. The Leader will take a few minutes to remove the tree from the trail. You do not need to participate... you can just offer encouragement.
After this little bit of trail work, we will return the way we came.
Once at Minnewaska Lake we have the option to take the carriageway along the opposite side of the lake and stop for one more vista above the lake (what a fantastic view).
During our hike we will discuss the unique ecology and history of the Lake Minnewaska area and the Shawangunk Ridge.
Because of the very rocky terrain along parts of the trail, hiking boots are required. No sneakers please. Dress appropriately for the weather. Layering is recommended. Don't forget your hat, gloves, sunglasses, 2 liters of water, snacks, and lunch. There are Porta-Potty's at Minnewaska Lake. Note: this is a carry-in, carry-out State park.
Since there is a fee of $8 per car to enter Minnewaska Park we will meet at the New Paltz Trailways Bus Depot (139 Main Street, New Paltz. Corner of Main and Prospect Streets.) at 9:50 AM so we can carpool. If you prefer not to carpool, let Leader know, and meet us at the far end of the main parking lot (at the information kiosk) at 10:20.
If coming by bus from NYC take the 8:30 Trailways to arrive at 10:05 AM in New Paltz. Be sure to indicate when you RSVP that you are coming by bus so we can meet you.
Possible dinner afterwards in New Paltz for those that are interested.
If you have questions email or call Leader: Andy Moss at[masked] ( 7-10:30 pm) or via email at [masked], for more information and directions. I will provide my cell phone number to participants by email the day before the outing.
