Linville Gorge Loop Backpacking Trip

A four-day Veterans Day weekend backpack above and down into the "Grand Canyon of the East," this 22-mile Linville Gorge loop offers a super sampler of the amazing vistas and trailside distractions that the Linville Gorge Wilderness has to offer.

This will be a strenuous trip, so be prepared for some steep climbs and challenging navigation. Bring a sense of adventure and a flexible attitude, since in the past we’ve had to modify our trip on the fly.

If you want to check out the maps and trail description, go to Backpacker Magazine at http://www.backpacker.com/destinations/hikes/379572. There are also excellent maps available on www.linvillegorge.net, although you do need to register.

We'll still start at Wolf Pit Road parking area, but I've decided we'll head south on the Mountain to Sea Trail and do the loop in a clockwise direction. The Spence Bridge is out, so we'll be fording the river twice. The southern crossing is reported to be very rocky and about knee deep, so sandels or water shoes are recommended.

The weather forecast looks great if a little chilly (check out the forecast for Marion NC), sunny to partly cloudy, and low to mid-60's in the day, mid-to-high 30's at night. No rain forecasted.

...a beautiful, memorable visit to the wilderness...wonderful people...and thoughtful planning by Barry. Now that I am home in my warm house...'m thinkin'...hey that was great!...peace of cake!...memory is so selective. All I remember now is the beautiful weather, kind, joyful companions, endless views, boulder scrambling river's edge, the sounds of rushing water, howling wind gusts and - the "sound" of silence and space. "Let's do it again soon"

Thank you Barry for organizing and leading and amazing trip! Difficult hike but well worth the spectacular and breathtaking views. My first time backpacking with this group and what a great group of people. I'm already looking forward to the next adventure with you all.

Looking forward to a great trip! Please try to get to the meeting spot promptly at 7:00... we have a long drive :)

We have 2 river crossings, one deep with a rocky bottom, so I recommend water shoes/sandals of some kind unless you have really tough feet :)

Also still looking for our second driver.

    See you Friday!

We currently have 7 people signed up for this trip, a good size group. I can drive our van, but we'll need one other driver. Let me know... I also recently found a great trail guide for the route we're taking, which should help a lot with navigating. Looking forward to a great trip!

    Is there a waitlist available?

Would I be able to join the backpacking trip-- hiking with a small dog???

    August 12, 2013

    • Barry

Dogs are certainly welcome, so it's pretty much up to you and your dog :) There are some pretty steep sections on this trip, and there is also one ridgeline section where we may need to carry water to a dry camp (no water at the campsite).
