If you live in South Florida and enjoy hiking, backpacking, kayaking and rock climbing, this is the place for you. I started this group to find other people who enjoy hiking and rock climbing as much as I do- which is hard to find in South Florida. This is a group of outdoor enthusiasts who want to hike locally and also take some roadtrips to places with some elevation- Smoky Mountains, anyone?
A little bit about who your organizers are and what we do
LONG HIKES/ ROCK CLIMBING- Lori
I organize long distance local and out of state hiking and local indoor and out of state outdoor rock climbing events. Local hikes are on the weekends and are 10 or more miles and last between 4-8 hours. We hike at a pace of 3 mph or more. Out of state trips are 3 to 7 days. Most are in Georgia, Tenessee or North Carolina but we may travel farther. Out of state events are usually small group activities of 8 people or less. We use a "team" approach for these events, meaning all group members help with arranging travel, hotel, etc. You'll need to commit to the trip dates in advance.
KAYAKING, SHORTER HIKES, CAMPING, BACKPACKING/WEEKEND TRIPS-Armando ("The Paranoid Dictator")
Armando organizes kayaking, short and long distance hiking, camping, weekend trips and overnight backpacking, within Florida. Kayak trips range from 3-6 miles and last a half or a full day. Kayak rentals are usually available. Hikes are between 5-10 miles and are generally a more relaxed pace. Camping trips may be primitive.
KAYAKING- Stan ("The Man in Demand")
Stan organizes local kayak trips. Most of Stan's trips are in Palm Beach or the Keys. Stan usually organizes a kayak rental for his trips.
SOCIAL HOSTESS- Holly ("Social Hostess with the Mostess"
Holly organizes our social events, and she's a big fan of sushi and kareoke. She welcomes your input and suggestions for future social events. Although we love to socialize and meet our group members, we keep our social events limited to people who actually participate in the outdoor activities. In order to RSVP for most social events, you must have attended at least one outdoor activity.
BICYCLING, NATURE WALKS, FESTIVALS, INTERNATIONAL TRIPS
You probably noticed that there is no name under that list of events. This is because we do not have a host for any of these types of events. We will not be doing any of those activities until we have someone who can volunteer to be an event host for one or more of those activities. If you are interested, please contact me. Guidelines and Other Helpful Stuff Our Events Events start on time. Your event host will send an email before the event with the hosts cell phone number. If you're running late, you need to call and let the event host know so he/she can decide if the group can wait. If we don't hear from you, we will leave our meeting spot on time.
Carpool
We try to carpool for our events to save everyone wear and tear and gas money. If you want to carpool, you need to take care of the arrangements with the other group members. You can post a message in the comments section under an event or you can email members individually. It is up to you and the people you carpool with the figure out a time and place to meet and to decide how to split the cost of gas. Some people alternate, where one drives to one event and another drives to the next event. Others just chip in for the cost of gas. If you do carpool with someone else, you should be prepared to help with the cost of gas. Keep in mind something about carpooling, and this isn’t meant to scare anyone, but just common sense reality. This is a pretty large and new group. Armando and I have not met everyone in this group. So you need to assume that you are meeting a stranger if you decide to carpool. Some people may not be comfortable with that and I can understand that. You need to make your own personal decisions about carpooling.
Attendance
If you RSVP for an event, that means a spot is reserved for you. We need you all to be considerate with your RSVP's. If you have two or more "no shows" (meaning you signed up and didn't go without updating your RSVP), you may not be permitted to attend the event. If you "no show" 3 times, you will be removed from the group.
We look forward to meeting you!
