Prior to starting up his consultancy, Sano was an Assistant Research Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Institute of Design, where he conducted human-centered design researches in personal mobility and health care domain. He has designed several robotics devices that assist patients and caregivers, or prevents adverse events in health and elderly care contexts. He holds five U.S. application patents in designs of those devices. Before participating in academia, he served as a Design Strategist at Toyota and its U.S. design division, Calty Design Research, where he founded the company’s strategic design lab in New York. He leveraged concept car design developments by adopting human centered design methodologies, such as ethnography and collaborative workshop facilitations. He also promoted the company’s strategic design presence through hosting design exhibitions in art museums and design weeks.
