Thanks for the link, Oswald! (I haven't really figured out the Meetup interface yet, so wasn't sure how to reply to messages).

I've taken a brief look at the Backbone-D3 library you've sent me, and I do like how they use Collections to fetch the json data - that's something I haven't tried yet. I haven't had a chance to understand how they're wrapping the SVG elements though, because my main concern was easy access to the SVG element itself from a Backbone View.
