Stanford Professor Andrew Ng is teaching his famous online Machine Learning course once again starting August 20th via Let's get together once a week to discuss the course material and related machine learning concepts and applications.

We will occasionally have special guests give a short technical presentation on how they use machine learning techniques to solve real problems.

Current students, past students, and anyone with a hands-on interest in ML is welcome!

Just in case you haven't seen this, here's a possibly relevant paper that was very recently published:

A Few Useful Things to Know about Machine Learning by Pedro Domingos
    Communications of the ACM
    Volume 55 Issue 10, October 2012
    Pages 78-87

"... developing successful machine learning applications requires a substantial amount of “black art” that is hard to find in textbooks. This article summarizes twelve key lessons that machine learning researchers and practitioners have learned. These include pitfalls to avoid, important issues to focus on, and answers to common questions."

Amongst other things, there's some interesting discussion about overfitting.
