MongoDB at eBay

At our next User Group we will have presentations from engineers at eBay who have been using MongoDB for over two years in production.

"Doubling Up on Shards"
John Feibusch – Sr MTS, Data Infrastructure
At eBay we had a situation where a shard cluster had not been expanded for some time and needed to grow quickly. Since it was about three terabytes per shard, normal chunk migration would have taken much too long. We found that we could split each shard into two by moving database files and altering cluster metadata. In this talk, we'll show you how we efficiently implemented this shard migration by pre-splitting shards.

"Indexing Metric Metadata with MongoDB"

Yuri Finkelstein – Principle MTS, Architect Platform Service

This  presentation will cover the design of TopoStore a MongoDB based metadata store build by Sherlock team. Sherlock is a unified monitoring, alerting and logging platform for eBay that exposes real time data and insights, enabled by an extensible visualization platform.

Thanks very much to Feng Qu for helping us put this event together!

I thought that the problems were interesting as well as the solutions (although others may have not solved it the same way). I think the presenters knew very well their cases. The delivery was okay but it could have been (in both cases) clearer with a top-down, more systematic approach that would have left clear from the start the challenges, the general approach and key learnings. A good take away: "Always assume you will have to split further your shards and be ready with a plan. Automate and test proactively". Thanks

It was good. The second speaker could have used the mike properly. That is he was fixing the mike on the left shoulder and was speaking on the right side which caused little difficult in hearing. Other wise the problem taken and explained are all good. After all, i appreciate the interest in sharing the problem faced with the solution. Good Job...
