Volunteer at Upwardly Global's South Bay Career Summit

Would you like to help people in need practice their job interview skills and prepare for professional networking? No previous experience is necessary - training will be provided!

Today there are 1.3 million college-educated, work authorized immigrants, refugees and asylees living in the United States who are either unemployed or underemployed. In their home countries they were educators, bankers, lawyers, engineers, scientists, doctors and non-profit professionals.

Upwardly Global is a non-profit organization that seeks to help these professional immigrants reclaim their careers in the US. Upwardly Global creates employer partnerships that benefit from access to this talent pool. They also provide customized training and support for these new  Americans to give them an equal opportunity to find and secure skill appropriate opportunities and achieve their full economic potential in the U.S. The outcome is global talent for employers, culturally competent service providers for diverse communities, and family sustaining incomes for those who were previously unemployed or underemployed.

Upwardly Global has requested a little information from our volunteers prior to the event. Please answer both questions when you RSVP.

Details:

When: 11:30am-4:30pm

Location: Room 105. You can find me at the check-in table for the event.

Lunch will be provided

Dress Code: Please keep in mind that while this is an event for professionals to practice their job seeking/networking skills, we do not need to dress in business attire (suits, etc.). Business casual and jeans are ok.

This event is an opportunity for us to work with immigrant professionals on one-on-one job interview practice and networking sessions. The mock interview session will start with 20-minute training for volunteers on interview skills. We will run two practice interviews with the program participants, 45 minutes each, which will allow 30 minutes for the interview, 10 minutes face-to-face feedback for job seekers, and 5 minutes for volunteers to fill out the written feedback form. We then will provide valuable feedback for the job seekers upon the completion of the mock interview. After the practice interviews, we will continue with a networking session. The program will conclude with participants sharing best practices and recommendations.

You do not need to have recruiting experience or be multilingual to volunteer at this event. Upwardly Global staff will ensure that all volunteers receive the guidance/training they need to have a successful experience.

To participate, the job seekers that we will be working with will:

  1. have permanent work authorization (Green Card or refugee/asylee status)
  2. have at least the U.S. equivalent of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a university program
  3. have at least two years of professional experience outside the U.S.
  4. have lived in the U.S. between 0 and 5 years
  5. come from a developing country
  6. possess computer skills and at least intermediate English language skills

Please let me know if you have any questions about this event. Here is the volunteer FAQ from their website: http://www.upwardlyglobal.org/volunteers/frequently-asked-questions

This will be a great opportunity to help ensure that all members of our community have a chance at finding rewarding and fulfilling employment!

I am no longer able to attend today. Is there another opportunity for me to work with this organization? Especially, since I'm in the recruiting industry.
    Thank you

Hi Keisha - Upwardly Global holds their South Bay Summit a couple times a year, so it will be a little while until we do another event with them. They do offer a mentorship program and other ways to be involved. You can find out more here: http://www.upwardlygl...

Hi Jane! Welcome to Silicon Valley Volunteers! Glad to see you are interested in this event. This event is/will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis, so there is no waiting list. However, I was able to open up 1 more spot, and you are welcome to sign up for it!

    Hi Dani,

Thanks for your interest in the event and welcome to our group! For almost all of our events, the nonprofits we work with are counting on the volunteers to stay for the entire shift. That is especially true for Upwardly Global since you will be pre-assigned to 2 people to interview and the event will run the full time (until 4:30pm). Unfortunately, it sounds like it might be better for you to skip this one and join us at the next Upwardly Global event, or another event with us soon.

Re: 10/20 (11:30 to 4:30) South Bay Career Summit...I'm thinking I'll need to wrap it up by 3:00 pm due a prior commitment but I do not want to cause any problems for the other volunteers and participants...Can you please advise. Much appreciated
