For those that missed the last meetup, Matt Sonic, creator of VirtualReality.io and organizer of the SF VR meetup, gave a presentation. Here is a recap and some other thoughts: http://www.bbhart.com/1364/virtualreality-io/

The tl;dr version is: go download it and run it ASAP!

Great meetup! Here's a video of James from Survios demoing Zombies OTH with their doctored-up gear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1YMTbckFOY

Hi Howard, I was not able to get your card after giving demos but I would love to talk to you more about your business. Was great meeting you.

      December 13, 2013

    • Howard R.

Thanks, Great to meet you and really appreciate you bringing your gear out. Best part was crashing the race car into the wall! Guess it's my contrarian nature to stray from the normal course.

Hoping Cloudhead games are able to stick to their schedule this time, if so I should have The Gallery Six Elements Explorer School to demo w/Hydras, also will probably bring iRacing again since Karl never got a chance to check it out.

    November 19, 2013

    • Richard N.

Ouch Karl, still didn't get a chance to try iRacing?

      December 13, 2013

    • Karl K.

Thanks for bringing your whole setup Timothy!

I was on my way over to try it several times and I kept getting distracted. I was kicking myself afterwards :)

Unfortunately, I'll miss this meetup. I'm sorry I'll miss Matt's presentation and the demo by Survios. Hope to catch the next meetup. Happy Holidays! -Will

Will there be a high definition Rift available for demo at this event?

    December 11, 2013

    • Karl K.

I don't think so. Nobody from Oculus is scheduled to come up for this event, but you never know. They've surprised us before.

      December 11, 2013

  • Peter

Anyone with a Rift wanna see if this 'screen door effect' fix is as good as it sounds? https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4818

    December 9, 2013

    • Karl K.

Have you tried this mod Peter? I would love to see it in person, but I forget about the screen door effect pretty quickly so it's not worth cutting into the Rift for me.

      December 11, 2013

    • Timothy A.

I'm going to be trying this as soon as my 3m gets here. Already did the color mod wow... Adjusting at the gpu level makes all the difference.

Hope you can record some of the meeting and upload, or put slides in file section, or a link to someone blogging the event, as I can't attend.

    December 10, 2013

    • Karl K.

My professional background is in telepresence (15+ years), so I wouldn't say I don't believe in it. That said, at SVVR events I want to be present to focus on the people who are there, not troubleshooting connectivity and networking issues, and all the other distractions. My position is that if the technology was already good enough to have effective virtual events with this many people, we wouldn't need to be having meetup's about it in the first place. We are in no way against telepresence, opening events up to live streaming, etc. as it doesn't take away from people being present and enjoying themselves at the events, but all of those things require people and attention and we are stretched thin as it is.

      1 · December 11, 2013

    • Karl K.

John, sorry you can't make it. Most of the events have been recorded by fellow SVVR members or ourselves, and much (but not all) of that content has made it to youtube. This one will certainly be recorded as well. Keep on eye on the discussions here and in the new linkedin group for links to the videos as they get posted. Hope to see you at the January event!

Can't wait! I'll bring my rift and dev team project for all to play!

    November 19, 2013

  • Timothy A.

This will be my first event. I'll be more than happy to bring my Rift if people think it would help. Have a Novint Falcon also.

    November 10, 2013

    • Karl K.

I would also love to see the Falcon, please do. Are there any interesting VR apps that take advantage of the Falcon? (aside from the NSFW one that was on Reddit recently..)

      1 · November 12, 2013

    • Timothy A.

Half Life 2 has native Falcon support! The recoil and environmental feedback is awesome. I wish there was more support but it seems the investors pulled their money from Novint. Hoping the new resurgence in VR may bring em back.

  • Dusan B.

Hi, i would like to attend the next meetup, hope i don't end up as dead weight as i don't have much experience with actually creating any VR content. But i have experience with 3d graphics and i've been studying shaders, the openGL matrix and things like that.

    November 10, 2013

    • Karl K.

      Hi Dusan,
Affordable/consumer VR is too new for any of us to have much experience with it yet. We coming together from many different backgrounds to build this ecosystem. If you are enthusiastic about VR, I'm sure you'll have plenty to contribute, especially with a background in 3D, shaders, etc.

      Hope to see you there!

Hi Karl, I see that you've moved SVVR #6 back to Dec. 12.
Perfect timing. That'll be the day after our Reactive Grip Kickstarter will end.

Hopefully we'll have something to celebrate... =)

I just came across this event and am very interested. I am really interested in just getting to test out products like the Oculus and the Omni. Are there demos for people to use at these events?

    1 · November 6, 2013

    • Karl K.

Hi Scott, You will definitely have a chance to try an Oculus Rift at any SVVR event! The second half of every event is reserved for informal "open demo" time, and there are usually a half dozen or so Rift's running various demos, as well as other interesting tech to try out. While we haven't had the Omni at an SVVR event yet, it is something I am working on with Virtuix.
