The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

1994 Australian  1 hr 45min
Stars: Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce & Hugo Weaving

The one, the only!! The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The monumental milestone of 80’s gay disco culture that became a world-wide, crossover movie phenomenon. At one time or other we’ve all seen it -and loved it. Truly a “gay classic” –hilarious and raunchy and quietly touching at times- it’s the campiest, most fun ‘roadtrip’ move ever made. So it’s a great choice for our holiday season screening.

Story? It’s the disco era in Sydney: Two drag-queens and a transexual have contracted to perform a drag show at a bar in Alice Springs, a remote desert outpost 1800 miles away. So they buy a big bus, paint it lavender, nickname it Priscilla …and head west into the Outback.

The many “adventures” they encounter along this long road make for a fun, diverse and intriguing movie. Among the many discoveries they find: the transexual’s ex-wife is the person who originally contracted them. The bus breaks down and a good-‘ol-local boy repairs it and finds himself smittened by the transsexual character …and decides to join the bus journey. Also, one night in the “Outback" around a campfire they meet some of the nearby aboriginal people. They give their visitors a throbbing, lip-synced, drag version of Gloria Gaynor’s, “I Will Survive" and the aborigines join in!

The movie won an Academy Award for best costume design and was a hit at Cannes.

This movie was an absolute delight to watch. I always have loved Guy Pearce. Terence Stamp did a great job. Enjoyed meeting new people as well. Thanks Bill for your hospitality.

I enjoyed the movie much more so than I did the first time. It has survived the test of time as movie is almost 19 years old.

I agree, Tom. It's a classic. I think one reason might be that the characters and situations have archetypical resonance (like The Wizard of OZ - with a drag twist), the colorful human imagination set against the planeness of the Outback desert (or 30's Kansas). Whatever the reason, it's a timeless story. Glad to share viewing it with you.

Hey Bill. It doesn't look like I'll be able to make it. Too much last minute stuff. I've really enjoyed the group and I will miss everyone. *hugs all*
