We are an eclectic mix of readers. We welcome all comers - male and female, LBGT, liberal and conservative. We range in age from late 20s/early 30s to mid/late 50s. If you live in or near Silver Spring, can meet on the 3rd Sunday afternoon of each month, and like to read literary fiction, some history, some biography, and other non-fiction, then this book club is for you.
It's important to know that I keep this Meetup to no more than 50 members. If we are at our threshold then I will have to say "check back with us soon!". Apologies in advance if this happens to you.
We avoid mass fiction (like John Grisham, Janet Evanovich, Dan Brown, etc.). Literary fiction is a term commonly used to distinguish serious fiction from popular or mass fiction. According to Wikipedia: "In broad terms, literary fiction focuses more on style, psychological depth, and character, whereas mainstream commercial fiction (the page-turner) focuses more on narrative and plot."
Here are some of the books we've read:
The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
The Zookeeper's Wife - Diane Ackerman
The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch - Philip K. Dick
Seven Days in the Art World - Sarah Thornton
Uncommon Arrangements: Seven Portraits of Married Life in London Literary Circles 1910-1939 - Katie Roiphe
