Birthday Kayak Water Fight! Paddle, Practice Rescues, Snack Sharing

Celebrate a few august birthdays (mine and ron's at a minimum) with an afternoon paddle of 3-6 miles, perhaps followed by some rescue practice, and finishing off with a giant water fight to cool off. ..... bring a towel - no one will leave dry!  .....bring your water guns, water sticks, or IWSDs (improvised water shooting devices).  if you bring water balloons, they MUST be biodegradable and you MUST test them first to insure they won't injure your victims.  .....swim goggles, shop glasses might be a good idea, but water sticks are great because they won't hurt anyone, and you can also use them as a bilge pump.  see links below.

Pot-luck (bring your own food + some to share)  after the paddle.  check back for details,

if saturday weather is unfavorable, i will reschedule for sunday.

Great Fun & Fun Group that did actually participate. Such a clear night allowing us to enjoy & absorb the brilliant night sky and ga-zillions of bright twinkling diamonds in the sky. Total emmersion that night! Love this group ;<)
..... and that huge bright orange moon arising on drive home - sooo dissappointed that i never pulled over & took pic's .....

well, it seems that a lot of people came late or dropped out. i'm assuming that was because it was rescheduled from last weekend, and folks didn't get a chance to adjust schedules. we waited a while before leaving the ramp, probably for 30mins or more. and we were lucky to run into some other folks here and there on the water. it didn't go as planned, but i think those that joined us had as good a time as i did. some of us ended up staying late at the ramp, sharing some food and drink, and looking at the amazing stars on a clear dark cool evening. i didn't see it until the drive home, but the moon was just rising and was practically red! spectacular. of course, not a single photo of it came out :-)

Perhaps I have learned that its better to cancel an event and create a new one than it is to reschedule one. I ask that the other group organizers do not count no-shows against folks, because it was rescheduled (plus made an hour earlier when rescheduled to reduce chances of getting rained out).

Perfect Weather today for our Kayak Paddle & Water-Fight. Today's Lake water looks to be warmer than Summer Air Temperatures. Lots of paddlers so keep your PFD's ON & SNUG, wear swim-suits, & plan on having a (Water) BLAST. Great day to attempt a deep water re-entry in yer kayak too

so we have a lot of people and unfortunately i can't find a suitable venue near by for a cookout. eva, the evil genius, suggest that we bring things to share after the paddle that don't require cooking. so let's go with that plan - though that probably means bringing coolers and ice to keep things in your cars during the paddle. what do you all think?

shocking: saturday forecast is sunny, 83deg!!!
bring sunblock and plenty of water to drink.
i also suggest: bathing suit and water cannons!
    :-)

i was thinking about some kind of game. what if i brought a dozen yellow tennis balls and a dozen red ones. we break up into a red team and a yellow team. the red team scatters the yellow balls near them (about 6 ft away from read team members) and the yellow team scatters the red balls. then the teams need to cross into "foreign territory" to retrieve their balls , dodging whatever water cannons etc. the "defenders" bring to bear. generally degrading into a free-for-all. sound interesting? any other ideas?

i'd also love to do some rescue practice! (since we're wet already)

    Hi Everyone, (sat 8/17)

Most weather services forecast rain through the day today, and with a predicted high of 70 and 8-10mph winds, its not the ridiculously hot day typical for mid August when you would love to get splashed up at the lake. So I'm going to reschedule for next saturday and hope for the best. Hope you can come next weekend!

This is getting serious! Anyone have an extra water canon for me? And I was thinking just a giant sponge was going to work when I first signed up! Man, I had no idea who I've been associating with. Viscious people! My naïveté stuns me.

    July 26, 2013

  • David D

i bought the water ballons i put a link to above, and i guess i was expecting some kind of magic that would allow them to hold water yet degrade quickly. 3 days in a cup of warm water didn't even begin to decompose them, so they seem to still be a hazard to wildlife. i recommend water cannons! wearing goggles or sunglasses with a lanyard might be a good idea! i'm really looking forward to this!

I believe I can make it to this meetup, however I'm not certain. Will the possible cookout also be held at Jordan Lake?
    Thanks

Can one rent a kayak for this? I have kayaked a little, not a lot, but would like to come.

    May 27, 2013

    • David D

hi michelle. nearest place to rent is REI on fayettville rd in durham.

      June 4, 2013

    • Jean T.

Also, there's a marina somewhere on lake Jordan that now rents sit on top kayaks....perfect vehicles for viscous water fights.

I'll just be getting back from vacation in the western part of the state and will be soooooo ready to have that water fight! I can do it either day so ain't nothin' that's gonna stop me from attending the battle. Just you all wait! and of course I'll stick around for the food afterwards. and might just bring some too! and cold beer to wash the lake water from our mouths.
