Harris Lake Full Moon Paddle

Since we can't paddle at Rhodes Pond due to such low water we're moving the paddle to Harris Lake. We'll meet to the left of the boat ramp. You must have lights on your boat or you may get a ticket from the rangers and they DO TICKET you if you do not have a light on your boat. SAFETY - Properly worn PFD required with whistle required.  We will paddle using buddy system & never get out-of-sight of our group while always keeping ALL other paddlers in sight and keeping close-by for safety. Drowning can happen in just a very few moments, so we need to always respond quickly if someone gets knocked out of their kakak. No Fun unless we are all safe.

LIGHTS - A functioning white light is required to be on your person by law, but should only be turned on to warn other boaters. A RED Light should be on at all times during the night. This can either be a headlamp &/or a light attached to your boat. The red light will not destroy your/ everyones night vision but a white light will in an instant.

Michele, please don't wait a long time to paddle with us again. You are obviously a "Natural" when it comes to paddling that Necky Kayak. You definately made our Full Moon Paddle even more Wonderful ;<)

Sophie said it all. Google Earth says 3.5 miles each way. Very quick trip back. Thanks guys for not leaving me in the dust. Ron, thanks for the tip on the S hook. I think I have a strap that will work.

    1 · July 23, 2013

    • Ron Eugene W.

You may need a fairly large S-hook & of course tension must be applied at all times for it to work. There are other better ways to make securing your boat easier, i'll show you some next time.

    July 22, 2013

  • Marc

I'm loaded and ready to go. Unless I see a thunder cell on the forecast just prior to leaving (around 5), I'll be there.

Enjoy all. I hope to join you the next time out.

    1 · July 22, 2013

You should make your won decision about the weather situation. I think it looks ok & have boat loaded & plan to be there before 6:00pm. If i hear thunder while at/on lake, that is when i get back to launch & leave.

Have fun on the paddle; i saw the full moon this morning at 5 am - it was beautiful!

    July 22, 2013

    • Sophie

I saw it last night and it was beautiful too!!

I'm still coming, assuming weather permits, but could be a little late. I think the mosquitos would have enjoyed us in Black Creek (Rhodes Pond)swamp.

    July 22, 2013

    • Ron Eugene W.

Surprisingly i've experienced no mosquito problems while in boat even at sunset or after dark even along shoreline in Rhodes Pond, nor on Black River. . . . . UNTIL back at launch loading boat on car. Then YES, mucho malo mosquito's if no wind.

Check back about 4pm to see if weather looks acceptable for a paddle tonight. Thunderstorms & Lightning are possible issues

6 30 is the earliest I can make it. I may drive up and see if I can catch up with the rest of you. I know there are people on the waiting list so I will withdraw my yes and hopefully catch up.

Water flow is now (july 10th) only half the level 4 or 5 days ago & decreasing rapidly. i think we will have a fun paddle anyway, but may not get quite as far up the Black River

The bank just downstream of the dam was damaged a few weeks back by heavy rains, so the Wildlife people have been trying to lower lake levels. There was a pretty good flow through the gates when I was out there Sat. By 7/22 levels could be a lot lower than right now, depending on rain in the interim.

Hi Joan - My best friend paddled there y-day (sunday Jul 7th) & he said sluice gates are still wide open, Lake is ~ 16" below full, & yet he was able to go even further upstream than our previous best - so i remain optomistic. . . . We are doing an afternoon paddle there in 2 days (Jul 10th) so we will see. But 2 weeks in future, who even has a cliue. Wildlife Officer told me a few weeks ago (when lake was 42 to 48 " below normal) that problem was a large tree branch lodged in sluice gate so that they could not close it. I did see a large tree linb in 1 sluice gate that day. Maybe there has been more than 1 issue ??? Either way, this pond is always wonderful to paddle & enjoy, 24 hours/day.

..... anyway Joan, since i live in Clayton, I try to paddle Rhodes Pond at least once evry week of the year - its like my backyard, only, of course sooo much better :<) So hopefully i will have a clue before the full moon paddle

  • Glenda Seals P.

Thanks for all the great information. This trip is full but I will look for other "adventures." Looking forward to exploring more of the area. Hope you all have a great time!

    July 8, 2013

  • Glenda Seals P.

I just joined this group but have not been to an event. I am relatively new to the aarea and am unfamiliar with Rhodes Pond. What do you mean by, "not for the faint-of-heart?" Is it because of the mentioned snakes? Thanks

    July 3, 2013

    • Sophie

Glenda, going upstream will be tougher than usual w/all the rain and yes...there are all kinds of critters within the cypress trees and knees. We'll be winding through some tight spots and to get into the dam then you have to get out of your boat and pull it through...meaning you'll be getting wet for sure. However, it's well worth it...it's beautiful in there...magnificent!!

      July 7, 2013

    • Sophie

But, we may not have time to go that far...depends on the moon!! I don't wanna get stuck way back in there when it gets too dark.

      July 7, 2013

  • Elena

Switching trips. That'll free up a spot for someone on the waitlist :) .

Lisa will still be in a cast, so we can't do much until August.

    July 3, 2013

    • Ron Eugene W.

Sure are missing You Two & bet yer both missing paddling on the water.

      July 3, 2013

    • Denny M

We're missing all y'all too. It would be nice to be paddling on some of the hotter days!

      1 · July 3, 2013

  • Elena

Wow, those last three spots filled up QUICK! I'd love to go, but I'd need to borrow a kayak (mine are 16+ feet)!

    July 3, 2013

    • Elena

Ok, so two things. One, yea, looking forward to it (as long as I can get a kitchen pass..doh..should be ok though!). And two, I'd like to go on one as originally intended w a little white water and challenge..that sounded fun :) !

      July 3, 2013

    • Ron Eugene W.

The whitewater version is scheduled for this coming Wednesday.

      July 3, 2013

  • Joan S.

How late do you expect to be out in the swamp portion? I'm not sure I want to be there after dark. Rhodes Pond would be OK.

    July 3, 2013

    • Ron Eugene W.

We will be 'outa swamp' before sunset so we can watch the often incredible Sunset from Rhodes Pond. No Worries . . .

      July 3, 2013

John will be going as well
