"Meditation brings wisdom; lack of mediation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom."
The June school vacation is over. As many return from their overseas holidays craving for the next expedition, we thought we continue our international meditation buffet with an offering from Japan.
One of our long time regulars will Wei Ye will be sharing a Zen meditation practice offered at Shunkō-in (春光院, Temple of the Ray of Spring Light) in Kyoto, Japan. Shunkō-in belongs to the Myōshin-ji (Temple of Excellent Mind) school, which is the largest among 14 Japanese Rinzai Zen Buddhist schools. We're sure some of you are wondering what the Rinzai school is all about?
The Rinzai school (臨済宗; Japanese: Rinzai-shū, Chinese: 临济宗 línjì zōng) is one of three sects of Zen in Japanese Buddhism (with Sōtō and Ōbaku). It is marked by the emphasis it places on kensho ("seeing one's true nature") as the gateway to mental liberation and true wisdom.
The School is also known for its insistence on many years of disciplined post-kensho training to embody the free functioning of wisdom within the activities of daily life. Training focuses on zazen (seated meditation), kōan, and samu (physical work done with mindfulness).
The Rinzai style of Zen practice may also be characterized as somewhat martial or sharp. In this regard, Rinzai is often contrasted with another sect of Zen deeply established in Japan, Sōtō, which has been called more gentle and even rustic in spirit. A Japanese saying reflects these perceptions: "Rinzai for the Shōgun, Sōtō for the peasants" (臨済将軍、曹洞土民, Rinzai Shōgun, Sōtō Domin).
Why be a peasant when you can be a Shogun! Come join us for an evening of fun, lively yet enlightening session. Sit, Lie, Lotus, Sleep, Pray, Meditate, Levitate or Vibrate - it's all up to you!
Don't forget to round up your friends, auntie, neighbours, buds, shopping 'kakis', gossip buddies, J / KPop Fanclub, BFF's and anyone else you can drag along.
