Latest Update: I have been informed by the organisers that limited slots are available due to overwhelming response. You need to register online with them once you have RSVPed here before all slots are taken up. Priority will be to those who have registered in previous years.
This event is an initiative of Bike-Aid (Singapore), a registered society in Singapore. Bike-Aid Singapore has been established for more than 20 years now and have had involved in many fund raising projects here and overseas - kudos!
"Ride for Rations 2013" is into its third consecutive year now and SOS is more than glad to disseminate this meaningful event to as many members to sign up, either as cyclist, volunteer or donor.
The key is fund raising and all the funds would provide a substantial amount of monthly rations to needy families, identified by Sunlove Neighbourhood Links, which is a project by Sunlove Abode for Intellectually Infirmed Ltd (commonly known as Sunlove Home), an organization registered under the Charities Act. The Neighbourhood Links are located around clusters of 1 room blocks in Marsiling, Chai Chee and Hougang. Most of the residents include: senior citizens; having no sources of income; suffer from and, or are recovering from medical and intellectual infirmities; and are dependent upon minimal financial help and handouts to cover rental, conservancy, electricity and basic food.
This year's target has been upped. The organisers are aiming to raise at least S$220,000 to help at least 250 needy families. The organisers are aiming to get 100 cyclists and 20 supporters, total 120 participants which will take us from Malacca to Singapore over 2 days, with a night stopover in Batu Pahat. This is not a race, it is a leisure ride with many stops along the way and there are support vehicles (provided by the volunteers too) following the cycling entourage. The total distance is about 240 km over 2 days, doable by recreational type of cyclists. Of course, one has to bring own bike.
Cyclist needs to pay S$250 for accommodation (2 nights), one way coach transfer, some meals and drinks/bananas/fruits during the ride and above that, each cyclist needs to raise a minimum sum of S$500 from friends, colleagues and relatives. Please note funds cannot be raised by approaching members of the public. It has to be done on a private basis through people known to you.
Those who do not cycle but volunteer as support crew (without car) will still need to pay S$250 per person like the cyclists. For those who volunteer and are driving as part of support entourage, need to pay S$200 per person.
To register, you have to go to this link here: http://development.bikeaid.org.sg/registration/?action=evregister&event_id=4.
Separately, you can click YES on this event so that we know how many from SANL have participated, as cyclists or support crew (with or without car).
Please read the Q&A on this link, http://development.bikeaid.org.sg/ride-for-rations-faq/ before making your registration.
Last but not the least, you may wish to know that the organisers from Bike-Aid Singapore are volunteers themselves, no profit is to be gained from this project and all raised funds are channelled for the purchase of rations on a monthly basis. They are committed to help the needy families in whatever they can and your support as cyclist, support crew or donor is definitely appreciated.
Let's make "Ride For Rations 2013" another successive fund raising outing. Hip, hip, hip...hooray!
