Cooking Together. For Real.

Since the last meetup did not come to be but it had such good response, let's organise one for real this time.

Just be warned that I am not a professional chef, or even a full-time one. ;] The objective of this meetup is to share simple recipes and methods which those of us have tried before. Doesn't mean that you can't share too!

On the menu so far is:

1) Thai Seafood Vermicelli Salad

2) Vietnamese Spring Roll

3) Mango Pudding (Subject to availability of fruit!)

4) Otah Otah

5) Lemongrass and Ginger Drink

After cooking, the fruits of our labour will be our dinner!

*The above recipes will contain certain ingredients which are allergens, such as seafood, including prawns and garlic (yes, I have a friend allergic to garlic)

*I understand for some, this will be considered a light meal, so do take note!

*If you would like to help out on that day, please contact me at[masked]!

We'll figure it out step-by-step. I've never done this before so suggestions or advice would be good as well.

Let's do this!!

Update for all! Found 2 more kitchens just in case. One is called Expat Kitchen at Little India area. Another is Shermay's Kitchen at Holland V. As to why I am looking for more kitchens is on the off chance that we can find one which can hold more people at a comfortable price so we can have the best for everyone!

I try to confirm place and time by this week!

    Food-wise, now we have
    1) Vietnamese crab spring roll
    2) Thai Seafood Vermicelli Salad
    3) Indian food (Chicken curry/paneer/snacks)
    ... Anymore?

I can buy the ingredients or we can take some time to do buy them together as well. Which do you prefer?

    February 15, 2013

  • Loh Y.

    Dear All,

Sorry for the absence! It has been on my mind!

As you can see, venue fixed, out of my convenience to set that aside as soon as I can.

Trying to fix the price now for everyone. Aiming for $35/pax but not confirmed!

Just a heads up, I will have to collect the charge, once set, from those who have RSVP-ed here by 22nd Feb 2013. After which, the meetup will be open to the waiting list and those not on the list until we reach 28pax. The last leg of collection will end 28th Feb to give me a the next 2 days to prep the ingredients and what not.

To be as fair as we can, those who are unable to make the meet up please RSVP as NO so as to allow others a better chance. Thanks! Stay tuned, people! Thanks for sticking around!

    February 14, 2013

  • Jeremy C.

ok so far we have a few options for venues.

    Creative Culinaire
    Tessensohn Road Studio
    Scoop of Art?
My shop, as a last resort haha!

actually if you all don't mind, I can rent a space for a whole afternoon or morning for 350 bucks. kitchen is basic but functional, def can fry spring rolls. but they have a super awesome bbq setup and can def hold at least 30 people, more if needed. if everyone is ok with chipping in 35 bucks each, we can easily cover food and drink costs. the space is on hindoo road near jln besar.

i suppose this way, it won't be so much a cooking class but rather cooking together. may work as a first meetup to get to know one another. i can do the prep for the bbq and the purchasing for the other dishes, just lemme know what's needed.

how does 24th feb or 3rd march sound? sunday from 2pm onwards so we can eat by around 6pm.

just suggesting. if we have concrete dates to work around, might make things happen faster :)

    January 23, 2013

    • Jeremy C.

Oh sorry, I look Chinese but dont do all that haha! BBQ will be dinner. We can meet and start preparing at 2. My shop can't BBQ, no license for open fire.

  • Cathy

Hey Shermay's kitchen, I've been before. Doubt the space is conducive to accommodate more than 20 of us. In additions, highly expensive too.

    January 28, 2013

    • Loh Y.

Hi Cathy, that's what I suspect as well. Expat Kitchen came back to me and they are also $150/hr. If we have 30 pax for 4 hrs it's $20 each for the kitchen.

      January 28, 2013

    • Loh Y.

Whether or not we are paying for a kitchen I am looking at $20 each for ingredients. (Hope to cut to $15!) Of course, if you guys want drinks, then that will be included in the cost as well.

      January 28, 2013

  • Loh Y.

Hi guys, just to let you know that there might be a delay as work has been quite crazy recently and I found a few more promising locations so I'm looking into it. I would like to find the best location for the best value for all of us! So please be patient. Don't worry, I will choose a date togive ample time for us to prepare!

Hi ru guys looking for an professional cooking studio like or jus basic kitchen decent enough to cook and move around? If looking for home kitchen u can use my kitchen.. I stay at queens close. U can contact me on[masked]

      January 25, 2013

  • Loh Y.

As for the ingredients, we need other suggestions for different dishes first! From there, apart from perhaps some ingredients which are more specialized, we can buy them together then pay as a lump sum.

I was thinking to save on everyone's cost as well, if you guys want we can have the basic ingredients (like soy sauce, pepper, salt, etc) be an ingredients potluck as we will most likely not need a whole bottle for whatever we are cooking. We can save by bringing them from home.

The plan (for now) split into 4-5 groups and each make a different dish. Maybe from different cultures/countries, or even different courses (i.e. Appetizer, Soup, Main, Dessert. All from diff cultures too).

So apart from a confirmed Vietnamese spring roll, anything else?

I can make a Thai vermicelli seafood salad if there are no objections. (Not perfect but it's still yummy!)

BTW, don't worry if you suggest a dish and it doesn't come out awesome. It's the fun of making it together that counts!

    January 23, 2013

    • Yvonne C.

I wud luv to learn Thai vermicelli seafood salad.. If we team up to make a dish will we hav chance to see and learn what others are cooking?

It's something like our fresh popiah skin.. Not those regular type u see everywhere that soak in water to wrap type.. Prime supermart - I will go there check it out.. I'm think fish sauce Thai or Vietnam sud be e same.. Once I find e rice paper will let all know.. Most importantly let's set a date to cook ;) cheers!
