The First Friday Skate Miami Beach

Hello Margie,

I would love to be able to include all skaters
on the First Friday Night Skate in Miami Beach but unfortunately we cannot cater to all skill levels because the Police are on a tight schedule and we have to keep the group as close together as possible for safety and logistical reasons.  Also this is a fairly long skate at around 12 miles which is too far for beginners and even many casual skaters.

I emphasize on our web site that the First Friday Night Skate in Miami Beach is not for beginners or slow skaters for those reasons.  Read this excerpt from our web site below...

"You must be able to skate along at a decent pace in order keep up with this group since we skate at a speed of about of 10+ miles per hour."

Slower skaters are better off attending one of our weekly skates at Hollywood Beach ( or Boca if you live up north ) where anyone who knows how to skate is welcome and can work to improve their skills to the point where they can participate in the bigger, longer & faster skating events.

As far as the police escorted bike rides go it is much easier for people on a bike to go along at a decent pace than to skate at what we consider a decent pace (10-15 mph).  Newer skaters tend to go very slow and it would take us twice as long to complete the 12 mile route we currently do.

I will however bring up your suggestion to the other skate group leaders and perhaps at some point in the future we maybe able to come up with a new route that would be easier for newer skaters to handle.

Note: When there is enough group participation we sometimes have a 2nd slower, shorter & more casual skate after the 1st faster one on Friday nights at around 9:00 - 9:15 pm but we can't guarantee that it will happen every month.

By the way, cyclist are welcome to all skating events so if you can't keep up on skates bring your bike!

Thanks for writing,

I think you might get more people to show up if you open it up to different skill levels like some of the local bicycle clubs do. It is hard for people with "regular" skates to keep up with the group that has more professional type skates and can go faster. I've already gone a couple of times and have had to go into the police car once you are at the back of the pack. It's not worth it for me to go if that's the policy. I skate around my neighborhood for two hours straight and enjoy going at a regular pace.

The monthly Saturday bike rides offered by Miami Beach cater to all types of cyclists.

Although I enjoy skating alone, in groups, and with you, I hope you lose your police escort.
This is a very expensive use of public resources.

Hi skaters,
Our monthly First Friday Skate is this week, and it is important that you clear your calendar to come out and skate with us. We had great weather the past two months, but a low number of skaters. We may be in jeopardy of losing our police escort if we can't get a big crowd for our Friday events.
Please do whatever it takes to join us this Friday at 6:30 on Lincoln Road Mall and Washington Ave. Skaters and bikes welcome.
Have you thought about joining National Skate Patrol? If you want to learn more about NSP, talk to Bernadette, Bob or any of the skaters in the bright red shirts.
See you Friday!
