Panel Discussion: Deconverting From Mormonism

Hello Members,

Our Monthly Meetups are changing format.

It's a mixed blessing but we have out grown the Queen Victoria. Myself and the other organizers have discussed it and we've decided to have more formalized monthly presentations.

For the next few months our format will be thus:

Skeptics in the Pub officially starts at 6:30 PM. If you want to eat or have a few drinks, please get your orders in by 7:15 PM.

At 7:30 PM the talk will start and bar service will be suspended. The talks will last from 45 to 60 minutes. After the talk is over, bar service and casual conversation will resume.

We'll work with this format for a few months and see how it goes.

If anyone is interested in giving or has a suggestion for a presentation/presenter, please contact me.

This month: Mormonism and the Deconversion Process. David will be joined by 2 former Mormons. One deconverted many years ago and the other more recently. They will discuss some of the misunderstood aspects of Mormonism, what's it's like to be a missionary, and what happens to you after you leave the church. We'll smash some myths, learn a lot about the youngest of all the established religions and get a truer insight into the faith.

Hope to see you there.

Thanks for organizing the event and thanks to the speakers as well for sharing their stories. Given the title, however, I was expecting more details on the reasons of their deconversion, first-hand accounts on difficulties encountered in the process (if any), and if they have intentions on helping other Mormons deconvert, and how. On the other side, hearing what their lives were like while considering themselves part of that church was very interesting and informative; meeting people with the courage to leave such a seemingly tight community was inspiring.

Good comment Fernando. I had intended to talk more about that. We got off track and only explored it in the context of the other issues; Temple Recommend, Divine Promptings, etc.

I think the new format is great. Just the kind of conversations that skeptics enjoy

It was a great and informative panel discussion. I learned many new things today although I had been to Mormon church long time ago(I 've never been a member). Thank you for organaizing!

Unfortunately will miss this as I'm seeing the Killers, which is kind of ironic as the lead singer is a practising Mormon

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
