At our last meeting we had fun with a headline similar to the subject of this post. Today an item appeared in the paper nominally on this incident (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/09/weekinreview/09gorman.html?_r=1) that takes the topic into the realm of why we believe stuff. The article is an enjoyable read.

It's kind of like the old saw that airplane crashes happen in threes. However, analysis shows that it is really the reporting of airplane crashes that occurs in threes. Once one airplane has crashed, the media is all about the airplane crashes so they make a big deal about the next couple that come along. But once they have gone through the reporting of three crashes they get bored with it and move on to other topics.

Remember, it doesn't take much to get a journalism degree other than learning how to write in the preferred AP style. There are no requirements that journalists learn anything about the science of how the world actually works. Plus the media industry as a whole is pushing out the few good journalists in favor of those who will work cheap. And yet, these are the people from whom most of the world gets their information about science. Scary thought.

The media will get bored with the die-offs soon enough and go back to reporting about whether or not Kim Kardashian is wearing any underwear today.
