Last night, I spoke with Mark Taylor. Unfortunately, he is unable to reconcile his childcare and work commitments. So then there was one.
I would just go next weekend but due to this website, I have been directly contacted by a lady from Liverpool who is going to La Plagne Montalbert with her friend on the weekend of 1st February. Even if it is not possible to catch the same flights or stay in the same hotel, the proposition of knowing people in resort is attractive. I have postponed my trip until the first week in February and will be scheduling it as a new event.

Present conditions are reasonable but due to warm weather only high resorts will have good snow. Not looking good for Andorra.

I have spoken with Mark Taylor. He would like to travel on the 18th January 2014, but his social and work life need to drop into place. He is up for making a late booking.

I have been away three times with Mark Warner http://www.markwarner.co.uk/booking/search.aspx?searchMode=ski&departureAirport=0&departureDate=18/01/2014&duration=7&numberOFRooms=1&occupancy=1,0,0,0&childages=&CountryID=319&TourID=0&flexibility=3&resortID=0 booking only two days in advance. I paid around £400 each time. The great thing about Mark Warner is that they have ski hosts. The guests go into ability groups and the best seats in mountain cafés are booked.

We are looking to book on the Thursday before travel. The trip is still wide open to anyone wishing to join.

    Hi Nick
Sorry I am going to have to drop out of the ski trip as I can't rearrange my work commitments. I am still interested in a ski trip should there be another one.

Sorry to hear that news, Sue. Still it saves me asking if you wanted to share a room with me. [grin]

    Hi Nick
Really appreciate your enthusiasm but I'm not sure this is going to get off the ground and on top of that my house sale has fallen through. So I'm planning to visit Scotland for a few weeks walking and maybe some skiing. I'll stay in the group just in case but as I can go at the drop of a hat, I'll probably get a cheaper deal that way.

      Hi Geoff

Sorry to hear about the house sale. Please, take a look at my reply to Mark. I am going skiing. If just one person wants to go on the 18th January 2014, we have bust the single person supplement. There is only one predictable reason for me not travelling on that date and it is that no one else is going that week together with the prospect of arranging something in February.

For the benefit of anyone else who would like to ski or snowboard the week of 18th January, the trip is wide open to newcomers. Nick

Was good to meet up with you all last week. At the moment I cannot confirm to the 18th due to possible other commitments.

If you and the others want to go ahead and book or move back to the 25th I fully understand and I will have to take my chance. If your plan is to wait until the last minute ie Thursday before you go, then I might be able to join you then but can't commit now. Kind regards Mark

      Hi Mark,

Thank you for advising us of your position. For the benefit of others reading, you favoured booking in the near future for Alpe d’Huez. It is undoubtedly a sound idea. As you have knowledge of the resort, accommodation and companies serving the area, my personal plan was to let you research then fit in with the consensus.

However, all is not lost and the delay in booking may actually be working in our favour. In November, the season started well with good snowfall and some resorts opening early. Since then the whole of Western Europe has been in high pressure area with a warmish air stream from the southwest. http://www.netweather... and http://www.bbc.co.uk/.... This is reflected in the snow reports http://www.skiclub.co.... Booking on the 16th January 2014, will allow us to see where the snow has fallen and prices will be lower.
      continued...

To state my position, this winter I am going on a skiing holiday. The 18th January is a good date and I tend to the strategy of booking two days before. If you are able to clear the decks for that week, the ski trip is on. We sort everything out on the 16th. Please, let us know as soon as you are able to commit.

I’m skiing this afternoon at Runcorn http://runcornski.weebly.com/open-skiing.html. Just to kick those skiing muscles into life. There is no expectation of improving my technique but two or three visits to the dry slope certainly makes the first couple of days in resort free from aches and pains.

So glad that I went. Felt quite comfortable on Saturday evening but on Sunday went for a walk. Not far, just a three hour wander. It made my calves ache and now my shoulders hurt. The shoulders are due to the unaccustomed use of ski poles.
Well worth it. I will be hitting the dry slope again in a few days. A bit boring but it gets those muscles working and I would rather ache now rather than when I am on holiday.

Hi nick, Eton mess was shared with friends! I will say yes to Aviemore but again all hinges on the date!

    December 13, 2013

  • Nick W.

    Hi Carolyn,
It must be asked, in your profile picture, did you eat all that dessert yourself?
Regarding Scotland, there is now an Aviemore event. Click on its RSVP, you will only be registering your interest at this stage, not committing to going.

    Hi Nick

Glad you had a got meet up , sadly I think the date won't need suitable for me staring a new job in January so might not get the time off work, maybe later in January or February but if you do a weekend up in Scotland would really like to do this.

Four of us met in the Golden Fleece on 11th December 2013. We decided that we would ski for a week in France, flying out on Saturday, 18th January 2014, from Manchester. Mark agrees to the date in principle but will have to check his work commitment. So it looks like four of us going. The feeling of the group was that if an odd number of people were going then the single person supplement would be shared. Two strategies were discussed.
    1. Booking soon.
    2. Booking the Thursday before travel.

Consensus said that the total cost should be less than £1,000 per person. Anyone who would like to join us, please state your interest as soon as possible.

I will post an account of the meeting in the Golden Fleece later today.
