Friday Tech Talk: Security Theatre & the TSA: Weapons in Cinnabon & Gift Shops

Backscatter, Millimeter Wave Scan, invasive TSA pat-downs: what happens in the airport after passing through the security theatre?

In this talk, Terminal Corncopia, Evan Booth explores a seldom-discussed facet that even a marginally resourceful and MacGyver-esque individual can breeze through terminal gift shops, restaurants, magazine stands and duty-free shops to find everything they need to wage war on an airplane.

Evan will look at weapons — melee, ranged, incendiary and beyond — from concept to prototype in this serious (yet often humorous) talk, replete with photos and video.

Evan "treefort" Booth is a technology enthusiast with roots in advertising. His company, Recursive Squirrel Interactive, has serviced clients such as HP, 20th Century Fox, A&E, Discovery Channel, and Hess.

Evan is also a founding member of the FALE Association of Locksport Enthusiasts (www.lockfale.com), where he regularly gets to teach curious and generally attractive people the fundamentals of lock picking and physical security.

As I mentioned in the talk, I listed the exact items I used at the time (and I did use lighters when I initially presented this in March), but you can easily make substitutions. If you recall, I replaced lighter by running current through a thin wire.

I've seen Evan do this talk twice now and it gets better every time. He's constantly iterating on the talk and coming up with new ideas... I can't wait to see all the new material!

You'll be doing yourself a great disservice if you don't make it out to this one.
