Friday Tech Talk: Build Quickly—Don't Write Code

Sometimes, you want to build things fast.

Er, actually, that's pretty much all the time, isn't it?

This talk is about how to build Rails apps quickly by writing as little code as possible—standing on the shoulders of giants.

We'll take a tour through some of past development experiences (good and bad), dig into developer psychology, and walk through a few useful heuristics for making smart decisions.

Once SDW's own Jon Roes is done, you'll know the shortest path to a solid, maintainable app.

was a little odd for the topic to be changed last minute, but it was still good content.

Hey Rachel, sorry for the confusion. I actually just changed the name because it reflected one of the more interesting ideas I wanted to convey. I didn't change the content though, just the title slide.

ah! i obviously misunderstood. i thought we would touch on more specific framework choices as opposed to more general topics. still good content though! :)

Just saw the topic for the next. Thanks Josh. Will try to make the next one. Would really like to attend the one from today.

Was the topic different and not about building out quickly?

    • Josh Oakhurst

No, the topic was as advertised. Jon's title slide was taken from the description above, "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants," that's all.

Any chance that this would be recorded? Packard place is kicking off the NC IDEA grant workshops at the same time today...

Hi Fahad, we don't normally record the Tech Talks. Better luck in two weeks?

How long is this event? when I added it to my calendar, it shows it ending at 3pm. Is it really 3 hrs?

    February 15

    • Mark Rickert

Nope. It usually lasts about one hour. Not sure why they're always scheduled for so long...

Never noticed that before. Default end time is three hours for some reason. One must manually set an end time, which I will do from now on.
