Eagle Hill Family Day Hike! T3 Moderate

Eagle Hill

12K RT, 360M Elevation gain, Approx. 750M total elevation gained (up and down)

Trailhead:3K past the junction of Hwy 68 and Powderface Trail (Closed in Winter)

Map available online at:

http://www.kananaskis.com/pdffiles/kananaskis.pdf

The trail goes up and down, it's only 250 meters to the summit, but you do it several times so total elevation gain for the day is 700 meters or so, making for a workout.

The top of Eagle Hill has great mountain views to the west towards the trans Canada Highway. On the way up there are views of Moose mountain and Cox hill.

It's not a difficult hike and snow clears earlier than higher elevation trails so microspikes should be all that is needed.

Traihead access via Deer Ridge trail or Sibbald Flats trail (can decide at trail map sign at trailhead).

Directions:

Hwy 1 to Hwy 40. Hwy 40 to Hwy 68 - Sibbald Creek Trail (HWY 68) turn off to Sibbald lake campground, at 3 way junction keep left into day use parking area. There are trail head signs in the area.

You can also get on Hwy 68 right off of Hwy 1 in the Morley area before you reach Hwy40. (See map). THIS IS A DIRT ROAD.

Hi - I'm in between Victoria and Calgary and looking for some good physical activity while in Calgary. I'll be in town next weekend and wonder if there are any hikes/walks planned?

Okay, good-oh. Do we really need crampons as I can't find them. I can take three others.

Microspikes will be required for almost all hikes in winter, early spring, & late fall.

What about Baldy Pass (T3) with Midnight Peak as a possible extra for those willing to?

    February 11, 2013

    • catalin

I was told by an organizer of another (non-crazy) group that there is no avi terrain for Baldy/Midnight. They went there last week, you can check the pics if you want.

Andy, if we go to Eagle Hill you can lead, as you have been there before. Microspikes should be fine for Eagle Hill. Le tme know.

There is next to NO snow in Cochrane so i would be surprised if there is much snow at all in the Sibbald area. There may be pockets of snow on the Eagle Hill trail but for the most part the trail faces west and catches the full brunt of chinook winds.

Eagle Hill lookout is 15Km and 250 m verticle? THat the one you are thinking about? Micros spikes and not snowshoes?

      February 15, 2013

I spent like 5 minutes here and still do not know where you are going.
It is not a judgement. i just post the fact.

About Elbow Falls sorry. I drove out there today as far as the road closure until May 15. From there it's just walking on the icy road according to a woman who had just come out from 5 k in. Guess it would be better in May...
I really don't remember what's inside on the road.

Just joined wait list but...if we don't know where it's going why is there a limit?
Elbow Falls by the way is close, near Bragg Creek.

What about Elbow Falls? I wanted to go there late February but haven't been there for eons and don't remember my way around. I do remember it's gorgeous. Maybe someone else knows the area. Also didn't want to go alone. I can take passengers.

    February 14, 2013

Something short and sweet and close.

    February 12, 2013

Something along Sibbald Road would be good. Eagle Hill or Cox Hill. Cox could have lots of snow in places as we can only approach from the north east because of the winter gate.

Sulphur mountain. I really like to eat lunch indoor. People who want to do twice or run up by all means do it. :)
