Heart Mountain S5 Winter Scramble

Heart Mountain Winter Scramble

Distance: 12 km

Elev. gain: 875 meters

Time required: 5 - 6 hours be prepared for longer we are in the Canadian Rockies

Difficulty Rating: S5-Scramble If unsure what this means, please familiarize yourself. http://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/Trail_Rating_System/

Hike Description: If you love great views and are into a little scrambling this one’s for you. Mind you, for the first 2-3 kilometers you will have your nose to the grindstone getting up to the ridge. There are no switchbacks here as the trail goes straight up one of the ribs of Heart Mountain to gain the ridge. The ridge walk is highly rewarding although the hike out of the horseshoe can be a bit of a workout with snow and ice even more so. No one who hasn’t done at least several scrambles will be accepted on this trip. We will be hiking at a Slow & Steady pace with plenty of time for breathers and pictures.

Speed demons need not apply!

Recommended gear: Backpack min 30 litre, sturdy hiking boots, micro spikes or crampons mitts/gloves, toque, gaiters, hiking poles, sunglasses layered clothing with waterproof shell, headlamp with extra batteries, food and water.

Suggested passenger commuting costs: $15.00 for gas per person and in cash.

Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers; I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this hike. You will also be asked to provide the name and phone number of an emergency contact. You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this hike with the group.

Heart Mountain a.k.a. Prairie Mountain generously laid out a smorsgasbord of blue skies and snow-capped mountain peaks, oh, yes and some kick-ass cardio workout. Super fun group. Thanks Everyone. Five Stars.

Thank you for the water and pushing me up the mountain! The platypus tube is still frozen solid! It was an off day for me today! My micro-spikes sucks! I need to get the one you have. I owe the group some treats next time! Thank you again! This was awesome group to go hiking today.

Hi everyone, this is my first time doing a scramble. I am very fit and my endurance is great. I've done plenty of hikes before but first for a scramble. Is this hike OK for me? Just wondering. I do need a ride if someone is around Country Hills/Harvest Hills area or I can just meet you at Crowchild LRT. Will pay for gas. Thank you!

    Hi there,
I have done heart mountain before but during the summer. I have never done any scrambling in the winter before and I have never used an ice axe before. I have microspikes and hiking poles and I can rent an ice axe but I am wondering if this trip would be too difficult for a first time winter scrambler?

Last two times, i hiked heart in summer but things change a lot in winter. Given the warmer weather near calgary can send one or two rocks down the hill.

      February 13, 2013

  • Mike S.

I did this last winter and we were in deeep snow. Be prepared for this possibility, however I wouldn't expect it to be the same this year.

Winter conditions can change negatively or positively quickly, too. Last time I was on Heart winds were howling at 50km/h with windchill at -30c, for e.g.
