Multi-Day Hike/Camp to Mount Assinboine

  • to

  • Shouldice Arena

1515 Home Road NW, Calgary, AB (map)

  • I am planning a 4 night hike/camp into Mount Assiniboine, Saturday, July/20 and to finish on Wednesday, July24.We will start out at Mount Shark parking lot, and hike as far as McBrides backcountry camp. Then next day over Assiniboine Pass to Lk.Magog for 2 nights. There are several lakes that you can do days hikes from Lk. Magog. On Tuesday we hike over Wonder Pass aand walk along Marvel Lk.until we get to Marvel Lk. Campssite where we will overnight, then walkout back to our cars at Mount Shark.Total km.is about 53.The hiking path is wide and well maintained the only steep parts are thru the pass, which are not to bad even with a big pack.l have done this hike 2 times before the most recent in 2008.l have many years of backcountry camping experience and know exactly what works good for gear aand food and what doesn't.To go on this hike you have to be in good physical condition and be willing to carry a expedition pack which may weight 35-45 lbs. I wouldn,t suggest this for a beginners hike, but if you have the proper gear are fit its doable. If you need advice for gear and food email me thru the site or phone or text me at[masked]-3790.In the next few days l will post what you need to bring and what elevation we are looking at.The cost for this hike would be for 2 nights camping in Banff Nat.Pk. and 2 nights in Assinaboine Prov.Pk.plus food and gas cost.l will find out what the camping fees are and post later.

I just got off the phone to Ab. Parks and they said the Spray Lakes is due to open this afternoon. The problem is the road off of spray Lakes into Mount Shark Trail head is still closed and all the hiking area around it.Parks Canada said the Byant creek area is ok except for a bridge washout.

As of today, the Alberta Parks website shows Highway 40 now open to the winter gates and the Spray Lakes roadway open again.

I phoned Alberta Parks about hi-way 40,and they said they hope to have access to Peter Lougheed Pk. by the weekend. The road from P.L. to Mount Shark where we will be leaving is still closed. Parks Canada says the Byant Ck. area didn't suffer any heavy damage the problem is road access.Alberts Parks told me to phone back early next week to see if the Spray Lakes road will be open.I will have to know by Wendsday So if I need to cancel I can get my money back for the permits. I will email everyone by Tueday night to let everyone know if its a go or not.

    March 24, 2013

  • wayne

I was in Banff yesterday and was at the Parks office discussing the trip.I was told the maximum amount of people I can take on a reserved group trip at the 2 nights we will be in the Banff section is 10 people. So the last 2 people to sign up will have to go on the waiting list, sorry this is the rules.

    March 22, 2013

    • Paul S

Wayne, you can put me on the waiting list if you like. I'll take the chance that someone else will end up having to cancel going on the hike.

The fees each person is to pay will $9.80x2=$19.60 plus the res.fee of $11.70 spread over 10 people =$20.77,rounded off to $21 plus $20 for 2 nights at Assinboine P.for a grand total of $41 for each person for camping fees.I can book the Banff section 3 months in advance. The Ass.Pk.you pay cash when you get there. So make sure you take cash for this part.I will pay up front for the Banff section and will be collecting $21 from each person before we start off at Shouldice. If you are not prepared to pay me for the permits in cash donot sign up.
