No hike this time, just a birdwatching trip to Frank Lake, a short distance south of Calgary. At this time of year, we're not only seeing the return of birds that summer here, there are also plenty of migratory birds stopping by on their trip north. There is a short boardwalk with a birdwatching blind there, as well as some interpretive information. There may also be a chance for a short nature walk in the immediate area, depending on how muddy it is. Be prepared to whisper in the vicinity of the blind, so as not to disturb the birds or other birdwatchers who may be there.
Trailhead: Frank Lake parking lot. Head south from Calgary on Macleod Trail. From the High River overpass on Highway 2, proceed east on Highway 23 for 5. 1 km. There is a turnoff on the south side of the road that will take you to the main access gate and parking lot. During open hours, vehicles can proceed through this gate and continue for 1.6 km to the viewing blind.
Travel to trailhead: In your RSVP, indicate if you have a vehicle, and how many passengers you can transport, OR indicate that you are a Passenger. Transit users: I can pick you up from Heritage Station, please contact me to make arrangements.
Gear requirements: As the weather is very changeable at this time of year, be prepared with appropriate gear – check the weather forecast that morning. A bottle of water and a snack are a good idea, as well as your camera, binoculars, and any bird identification books you have.
Passenger gas share:
$10 Please note this is per person, and in cash.
Start and return time:
12:00 noon, returning in time for supper.
I will check the Meetup site for this hike in the early morning of the trip, in case anyone has any last minute messages.
I drive a light blue Dodge Caravan, and can transport 3 additional passengers. At the Meetup site, I'll place a sign for “Slow and Steady Hikers Meetup” in the rear window.
Who can attend: No dogs please. No children. Teens may be welcome, depending on the hike.
Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers, I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this hike. You will also be asked for the name and phone number of an emergency contact. Please come prepared with this information.
You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this hike with the group.
