Cirque Peak (Scramble 5) with Helen Lake (T4) Option

Saturday, July 13, 2013 - 7:00 AM

Cirque Peak's panorama is rated by the Copelands as one of the best in the Rockies in their guidebook "Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies".  To Helen Lake it is a moderate trail hike.  Beyond the lake it is technically a scramble to Cirque Peak due to it being off trail and very steep.  This is a great intro scramble for those who think they would like to give scrambling a try, but there is always the option to wait by Helen Lake (a beautiful destination itself) if you run out of gas.

Please indicate in the comments if you are planning to hike or scramble.  There is a lot of flexibility in this trip.  Due to the distance to the trailhead, we will be getting an early 7:00 am start at Shouldice.

This is also a nice opportunity to get a little further into Banff then we usually go!

  • Distance: 14 Km return to Lake Only, further to the peak
  • Elevation: 2993 m Peak / 2372 (Lake)
  • Height Gain: 1050 m to Cirque Peak, 621 m to Lake
  • Time: 5 - 8 hours (or more) at a moderate (not slow) pace
  • Difficulty Rating: S5 or T4. If unsure what this means, please familiarize yourself. http://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/Trail_Raing_System/
  • Location: Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93), 33.2 Km North of Hwy 1, Parking lot across from Crowfoot Glacier Lookout.
  • RSVP's open Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 7:00am

NOTE: ROCK HELMETS ARE MANDATORY FOR CIRQUE PEAK (NOT NEEDED TO LAKE ONLY)

ONLY THOSE WHO ANSWER THE RSVP QUESTIONS WILL BE PERMITTED ON THE HIKE.  Organizers have the authority to decide who is allowed on their trip based on your profile and hiking history.  Please ensure your profile is up to date, including a current photo.  NO WHINERS.

Gear Required: Rock Helmets (Mandatory for the peak), backpack, sturdy hiking boots, extra socks, mitts/gloves, toque, gaiters, hiking poles, sunscreen, bug spray, personal first aid kit, sunglasses, layered clothing with waterproof shell, headlamp with extra batteries, lunch & snacks, and minimum 2L water.

Carpool fare will be $25.00 per passenger for this trip & park passes are required.

NO GUESTS, you must be a member to sign up! & Please don't ask to be added to the RSVP's prior to the RSVP date.

Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers, I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. Loved walking in the alpine meadows, the scramble and the majestic views from the summit. It was a wonderful hike and I liked meeting in the pub with Andy's group afterwards. Thank you so much for the organizing Jessica!

Thanks to the group for being so keen & fun to hike with!! Cirque Peak speaks if itself & the whole hike was spectacular & enjoyable!! The marmots were a fun addition as was the swimming! My apologies for not arranging cars accordingly for the pub. Very exciting to share our great ideas for the club with Andy afterwards!!!

Looks like I'm bowing out of this one due to smashing a gate on my achilles tendon/heel…it's not currently cooperating with shoes/boots…go on without me and have fun!

Don't forget to bring a rock helmet if you want to scramble to the peak.... otherwise you'll be cooling your heels at the lake & playing with the resident marmots.
