Anniversary Hike / EEOR ( East End Of Rundle) S5

10.4 KM RTN & 900 meters elevation to the South ( East ) summit of Mount Rundle. This is not the true summit of Mount Rundle but is still an impressive 2590 meters above sea level.

This is not a trip for beginners. There is no exposure (until you look over the edge on top ) but it is steep in places especially higher up and you should be comfortable on scree ( loose rock ) because there is lots of it. There is some easy scrambling involved on this through some minor rockbands and a gully. The views of Ha Ling are especially nice from up here as well as Canmore, the Spray Valley and as far as Mt. Temple in the Lake Louise area.

A fun day hike discovering a mountain I had only driven/skied by before.

Andy, can I join your group? Yamnuska was cancelled this morning. Please let me know. Thank you!

Got myself a new rock helmet for this hike. EEOR is on my list of "must-do-hikes". Too bad, I had to cancel in favor of a lower elevation trail. Not comfortable hiking in uncertain weather (and hence, trail) conditions :-( Have fun anyways!

I will show up. Maybe I can hike today, who knows. Andy, if it's 8:30 and I'm not there, it means I'm running down Home Road.

I was so looking forward to this hike. But because of the weather I am changing my RSVP.

Any possibility of having EEOR rescheduled?

      September 6, 2013

  • catalin

Hmm, the weather is ... I better shut up :)

Is this still a go? we may choose a lower elevation forested trail.

    1 · September 6, 2013

    • Andy D.

      That's a possibility.

I'll see how the forecast for Canmore looks in the morning, right now it's a #4%@%! If I'm not at 8:30 at Shouldice, it means I don't come.

Rain....I will pass if this continues tomorrow

:( sorry, I didn't realize I would get on all of the hikes I was interested in. I will have to do this one another time. Either way see you all at the pot luck!

Picnic, bring picnic food like weiners. :)

      September 6, 2013

  • Andy D.

A Helmet would be a really good idea to bring if you have it. I will bring an extra ( female ) helmet along. The potential for rockfall is increased in the gully and upper ridge. You may attend without one but you will either have to wait until the gully is clear or you go up first. Safety first people, we've had too many rockfall incidents this year already. Sorry.

    September 6, 2013

  • Miriam R

Is a rock helmet required for this hike?

    August 19, 2013

    • Marko

With a group of 26, a helmet would be a really good idea IMO.

      1 · September 6, 2013

    • Andy D.

I agree Marko. I don't plan on everyone going through the gully together. I will post that helmets are recommended and those without can still come but will have to wait for everyone else to go first or they go first depending on numbers.

I am pretty sure I am out guys sorry my knee is not doing well and I can barely walk my dog around the block so not a good idea. I will be at the party after :) Have fun, be safe!

Hi Andy, I have done Ha Ling Peak, solo, therefore I suspect I have the ability for this one. Let me know if you thing otherwise!

It would be interesting to compare your two Ha Ling hikes, Dan. Hope to catch you at the picnic and chat a bit!

    Going to Karen's hike :)

    September 1, 2013

  • Andy D.

Rock Helmets would be a good idea as this hike gets scrambly in the gully before the summit and there is a potential for rock fall. MEC rents helmets as does the U of C Outdoors Center.
