Outdoor Rock Climbing - Grassi Lakes (Beginners Welcome)

This will be sport climbing with bolted routes. The routes at this location range from 5.6 upwards (I'm not leading above 5.10a and that may be pushing it) Anyone able to lead can do whatever grade they're comfortable with.

Rock climbing is great practice for scrambling.

You don't have to have any prior experience, as long as we have a few people that can belay, anyone can climb. Knots and belayer will be triple checked.

I have 2 ropes currently that can be used, this limits the number of available RSVP's unless there are other climbers with ropes that don't mind using them.

Please answer all questions when rsvping to the waiting list. People will be moved to going based on these. This is not first come first serve.

Please do not RSVP No – I only need to know if you are attending.

Directions: HWY 742 behind Canmore...

Required gear: Climbing footwear of some kind - sturdy hiking boots/rock shoes etc., Climbing harness, Rock helmet, mitts/gloves, toque, layered clothing, waterproof shells, personal first aid kit, headlamp(s) with extra batteries, food and water - you can never have too much.

Recommended gear: Ropes, Slings, Biners, quickdraws, Personal anchor system (no daisy chains), Locking pear shaped biner, Tube type belay device (ATC), Camera

Please bring cash for car-pool drivers.

Cancellations after RSVP's close will be marked as 'No Show' as you're essentially taking someone else's spot that actually wants to show up.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me,[masked]

Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers; I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to participate in this activity. You will also be asked to provide the name and phone number of an emergency contact. You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this activity with the group.

Hey everyone, I corrected the meetup to Shouldice - this is what it was supposed to be. I didn't even realize I set that wrong.

  • Jamie

Anyone want to meet at Shouldice?

Mike, I cannot make it. Better let somebody else have my spot. I got a easy form of frosbite on one of my toes after our Mt. Joffre climb. My boots were wet, and my right foot went numb on the climb. It still bothers me so.... Have fun.

Damn.... really? Well, hopefully it gets better.

That was the main reason that I was so uncomfortable on that steep ice ramp. I didn't feel properly the ice with the crampons on my right foot.... And no ankle duport too... Next time I will carry my glacier boots ... It is good now but I still have the ichy sensation.

I belive its a first degree....

"This is called frostnip and only affects the surface of the skin, which is frozen. On the onset, there is itching and pain, and then the skin develops white, red, and yellow patches and becomes numb. The area affected by frostnip usually does not become permanently damaged as only the skin's top layers are affected. Long-term insensitivity to both heat and cold can sometimes happen after suffering from frost nip."

Hi Mike, sorry have to cancel as would like to do Baldy with Jerome the same day.

    September 9, 2013

  • Mike S.

Hey, Just a reminder - You must have at least a Rock helmet and a climbing harness. Helmets can be rented at MEC or UofC
Harnesses can only be rented at UofC (as far a I know)

If you do not have / are not able to get these, please update RSVP's.

I'm just waiting on confirmation of 1 more person that has a rope we could use. I'll add 2 more if he confirms.

Hey guys, I'm going to leave this at 6 people. with only 2 ropes, this is kind of the best I can do.

Atash; once you know if this is going to be 'too early' or not, let me know. No point moving you to going if you're 'unsure' (Not sure why you would RSVP if you're not committed...)

    • Atash

I would rather be clear than to drop out a week before like most people so I don't take up the space.
